I’m on a train, approaching the city — point B of my journey. We’re waking up, packing our belongings, clearing away the bedding. Sitting together, watching the sunrise. Finally, some peace. After yesterday’s horrifying evening in Kyiv, the night passed quietly. No attacks, no evacuations, no need to stop the train in the middle of a field and search for shelter. That was exactly what I had feared the most. And then there’s a man sitting opposite me. He’s watching the news on his phone, with the volume turned down, as if nobody can hear it. But I could hear everything perfectly well. He was listening to Russian propagandists. The entire time, I was speaking Ukrainian. I was talking about how wonderful it was that the night had passed peacefully. That, thank God, the Russians hadn’t attacked our train, that we hadn’t been stranded in a field overnight, and that we were finally almost at our destination. I was simply happy that we were alive and able to continue our journey. Meanwhile, he sat opposite me, listening to propaganda and becoming visibly angry whenever I spoke Ukrainian. And the sheer absurdity of the situation was tearing me apart inside. What a surreal reality. Here I am — a Ukrainian woman who loves her country, helps the Ukrainian Armed Forces, supports our soldiers, and documents the consequences of Russian aggression. Someone who, just yesterday, was running for shelter from Russian ballistic missiles, saw terrified children in their parents’ arms, and then cried on a train because of everything she had experienced. And opposite me sits a man listening to Russian propaganda telling people that Ukrainians are Nazis, that we are somehow responsible for this war, and that our own soldiers are supposedly killing their own people. So people like me are “Nazis” simply because we love Ukraine? The same Ukrainians who help the Armed Forces are supposedly supporting an army that “kills its own people”? Do you even understand how absurd this propaganda is?! We simply want to exist. To live on our own land. To speak our own language. To travel by train, meet our friends, watch sunrises, and return home safely. And not have to fear that the next Russian missile will hit us. We are not attacking Russia. We are defending our homeland. And what frightens me most is realising that Russian propaganda continues to find an audience even among people living in Ukraine, where they can see the consequences of Russian attacks every single day. I reported my suspicions about this man to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). I don’t know whether he simply consumes Russian propaganda or whether there is something more behind it. That is for the relevant authorities to investigate. But I know that Russian informants and missile spotters really do help the enemy carry out attacks. And Russian strikes target not only military facilities but also ordinary people, their homes, universities, hospitals, and everyday lives. And after everything I have experienced, it terrifies me to think how many people still justify this war. I cannot describe what I felt looking at him. I wanted to cry and scream with anger at the same time. Out of helplessness. Out of pain. Out of the realisation of just how deeply Russian propaganda can distort reality. And how many of these so-called “waiters” — people waiting for Russia to come — separatists, and people poisoned by Russian propaganda are still living among us?
