‘Dementia isn't just ‘forgetting things’ - it’s so much more than that.’ We asked you, what’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about dementia? Here’s what you told us: ‘It’s not just ‘getting old’ it’s a disease.’ ‘It affects everyone around that person immensely, not the person alone.’ ‘Losing a loved one while they are still here isn’t something that gets easier with time.’ ‘How hard it is to be the partner of someone with dementia, especially when you’re young.’ ‘It can be violent. even the nicest of people. Mostly out of fear, which is heart-breaking.' ‘There can still be joy in every day' If there’s something you wish the world knew about dementia, share it in the comments.

In my hometown, this gentleman went and sat everyday with his wife, who suffered from dementia. She passed away last July. Paul’s words about his wife, Martha: ‘We kind of grew up together because our families went to the same church, but I didn’t really start talking to her until I was in the Navy. We started writing each other when I was stationed at Pearl Harbor. One day, a buddy of mine and I were walking around, and we came across a woman who was selling engagement ring sets. Well, I had no interest and neither did my buddy because, you know, we had no plans to get married any time soon; but that woman talked us into looking at the rings, and we ended up buying a set. I held onto mine for a long time while Martha and I kept writing each other; until one day, I just decided to mail the ring to her. A few days later, I called her up and asked her if she got anything in the mail from me; and well, the rest is history. It was 57 years, last December. I came to sit with her every day and wave at the cars passing by. We’ve had a lot of adventures together—and she loved me through it all.’" Credit: People of East Texas

We don’t need another reminder that seniors matter. We need to act like they matter. At Voices For Seniors, we’ll keep asking the uncomfortable questions, calling out what isn’t right, and fighting for better care, dignity, and respect for older adults. Because getting older should never mean becoming invisible. 💙 #VoicesForSeniors #SeniorsMatter

Dolly Parton just passed away at 80 years old. She spent her final years as a CAREGIVER, doing what 63 million Americans do every day: caring full-time for the person she loved most - her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean. Before she passed, Dolly admitted something that I found totally heartbreaking: while caregiving for him, she completely neglected her own health, skipping doctors visits and ignoring her symptoms. I think Dolly's honesty points to three hard truths caregivers face. First, chronic physical decline, as AARP finds 1 in 4 caregivers say their own health has suffered. Second, the "widowhood effect," where a surviving spouse faces a significantly higher risk of death in the 12 to 18 months after their partner passes. And third, the sudden loss of purpose when intensive caregiving abruptly ends. Dolly died about a year after her husband. She leaves behind a rich legacy and a life of purpose and helping others. May she rest in peace. 🙏 If you are caregiving for a spouse or an aging parent, please remember what they tell you on airplanes: put on your own oxygen mask first. Taking care of your health isn't selfish but absolutely necessary. Please share this with a caregiver who needs to hear the reminder today, and let's honor Dolly's legacy. ❤️

Did you know that women have a greater risk of developing dementia over their lifetime? Around two thirds of people living with dementia are women, and dementia is the leading cause of death for women in the UK. The main reason for this is thought to be because women live longer than men, as age is the biggest risk factor for dementia. However, other factors also play a part in women’s dementia risk. Over the course of a lifetime, women tend to have different experiences than men. Some of these are caused by differences in biology, such as menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. Oestrogen is thought to play an important role in maintaining brain health, including blocking some of the harmful effects of substances involved in Alzheimer’s disease. Some research suggests that a very early menopause may increase the risk of dementia. Researchers are looking into whether menopausal HRT could reduce dementia risk. Social factors like education, work and lifestyle also play a part in women’s dementia risk, especially for older generations. Having a full education and opportunities for lifelong mental stimulation helps to delay dementia in old age. Historically, women have had fewer opportunities to attend university or work in highly skilled occupations. Genetics also play a role. Nearly two thirds of people with Alzheimer’s have at least one copy of the ApoE4 gene. However, while men and women are just as likely to have this gene, its effect on dementia risk seems to be greater in women than it is in men. We don’t fully understand why this is And more men are involved in research trials. With women being less represented in research, we still don’t fully understand how the diseases that cause dementia may affect women differently. Finally, when it comes to dementia, caring duties are more likely to fall to women than men. 68% of informal or unpaid carers of people with dementia are women, and more than three quarters of the social care workforce are women too.

Dolly Parton and the Beauty of Aging Vibrantly 💗 Dolly Parton represented something we don’t talk about nearly enough: what it looks like to grow older without allowing the world to make you feel old. She was a senior and she was still vibrant, creative, relevant, ambitious, glamorous, funny, hardworking and full of life. That matters. We live in a society that too often treats older adults as though their most important years are behind them. Dolly showed us the opposite. She kept working. She kept creating. She kept giving. She kept dreaming. She never apologized for her age, and she never let it define what she could do. This is how we should see aging. Not as disappearing. Not as becoming irrelevant. Not as the end of your story. But as another chapter one that can be every bit as meaningful, exciting and extraordinary as the ones before it. Dolly Parton was more than a music legend. She was a senior icon. And she made aging look damn good. 💗 #VoicesForSeniors #DollyParton #AgingVibrantly #SeniorIcon #AgingIsNotInvisible #OlderAdultsMatter #AgeWithPurpose

There was an elderly veteran who lived alone in a small house across from a daycare. Dementia had slowly claimed more of his memory each day. His eyes often gazed into the distance; he spoke little and smiled even less. His world had grown quiet and lonely. Then the children from the daycare noticed him. Every afternoon after school, they would run across together. No one had told them to go. They simply came on their own—bright smiles, warm hugs, cheerful chatter—carrying candy, snacks, and handmade cards. One wore a helmet and carried a wooden stick like a little warrior. Another stood beside him on the porch steps, watching as he opened a bag of popcorn. One hugged him so tightly that he softly said, “That’s a good hug.” At first, he sat quietly, sometimes looking a little confused. But day after day, their laughter, their embraces, and their lively voices fell like gentle rain on dry earth. Slowly, his eyes began to brighten. He started to respond. He smiled. He talked. He began waiting for them. He accepted their small gifts, pointed to a card bearing his name, and smiled again. He still forgot many things. Yet one thing he never forgot: every day, those children came to him. He knew he was no longer alone. Their pure, unconditional love gently drew him back to life. They healed him in the simplest way—by showing up and by loving him. May he always spend joyful days with those little angels. And may those children grow up carrying the same warm hearts forever. ❤️

🧠💜 Doing good may be good for your brain. Research suggests that volunteering in late life is associated with better cognitive function. Volunteer activities, such as supporting educational, religious, health-related or other charitable organizations, provide a way for older adults to be more physically active, increase social interaction and provide cognitive stimulation that may protect the brain. What are you waiting for? Find a volunteer opportunity with the Alzheimer's Association today: alz.org/volunteer. #SeniorCitizensDay

A Parkinson’s patient says his debilitating tremor vanished within minutes thanks to a newly approved, non-invasive ultrasound treatment. For years, 72-year-old Air Force veteran Bud Leavell struggled with severe tremors that kept him from living life to its fullest. Then doctors at UT Southwestern used focused ultrasound waves to target precise areas deep in his brain... without opening his skull. At his latest follow-up, the tremor remained under control. His response when asked how he was doing? “What tremor?”
