One of my favorite books because the whole novel is meant to be a mockery of Leibniz and his philosophy of Optimism. He puts all the characters through the funniest circumstances.

I lost it when I found out napoleons marching song was “I like onions fried in oil, I like onions when they’re good. I like onions fried in oil, I like onions, I like onions.”

One of my hockey teammates is a Russian ex professional player. Good dude and well liked by everyone. I’d never taken him for a simpleton, intellectually speaking, but I’d assumed he was more or less your average guy. I’ve since discovered that when you give a Russian enough to drink, something else entirely tends to emerge. We were in the car on the way to drop him home from a party, discussing a married woman who’d been flirting with both of us. The complication was that her husband was one of the coaches, so although we’d both noticed what was going on, neither of us had been particularly comfortable addressing the elephant in the room. Then he came out with a line in his thick Russian accent that caught me completely off guard. It was one of those moments that makes you realise there’s a whole dimension to a person you’d never thought to look for. These Russians, I’m beginning to suspect, possess a spiritual depth that the rest of us rarely encounter. “You know, she is like tiger in a kletka. (Cage) She see one Italian bodybuilder and one hockey superstar and cannot control herself.” I nearly lost it but under the humour was something profound about the way he’d put it, I don’t think words can describe this man’s countenance when he said what he said. The image and delivery felt like we were in a Dostoyevsky novel. It’s wonderful to discover that a person you thought you had figured out has an entire other world inside him.
For all their flaws, Russians seem like the most ensouled of humans beings

One of the things I’m working on getting better at is not threatening people with facial degloving when I sense that they are passively making fun of me. (I can be trusted with sharp weapons) #onlyhuman

I need a gf who would, like a parakeet, pluck all the feathers out of her wings in the face of my death, but women are no longer angels and romance is dead.
