That thing would've been nasty in a classic muscle car
Back to more engine stuff, and yes, I've actually had my hands on one of these engines.
The engineer stands behind the engine with a cigar in his mouth, wearing a white shirt, his expression captured in a moment of pride. The engine on the stand represents Chrysler's ambitious Ball-Stud Hemi project, designated A279, an attempt to develop a more compact, lighter, and less expensive hemispherical V8. The goal was to consolidate several existing big-block engine families into a common architecture that could deliver Hemi performance without the packaging difficulties and manufacturing costs associated with the 426. The proposed design was roughly 100 pounds lighter and 6.5 inches narrower than the production 426 Hemi, potentially making it easier to install across Chrysler's vehicle lineup. It was an ambitious engineering program, but it never reached production.
The engine's production-oriented details distinguish it from a dedicated racing Hemi. A conventional air cleaner sits above a single four-barrel carburetor rather than a tunnel ram or dual-carburetor competition setup. Beneath the valve covers, the hemispherical combustion chambers retain the characteristic arrangement of intake and exhaust valves on opposing sides. The major difference lies in the valvetrain. Instead of the 426's shaft-mounted rocker assemblies, the Ball-Stud Hemi used individual rocker arms pivoting on ball studs, a simpler arrangement similar in principle to the system used on Chevrolet small-block and big-block V8s. Eliminating the bulky rocker shafts helped reduce the cylinder heads' overall width, weight, and manufacturing complexity while preserving the basic hemispherical chamber concept.
The A279 program also aimed to simplify Chrysler's engine manufacturing. Based on the low-deck B-engine architecture rather than the taller RB platform used by the 440 and 426 Hemi, the proposed design sought to make greater use of existing production methods and tooling. Plans reportedly included 400- and 444-cubic-inch versions intended to cover much of the company's big-block market. A successful program could have reduced the number of distinct engine families Chrysler needed to manufacture, although the precise degree of parts interchangeability and tooling savings would have depended on the final production specification. The concept offered a practical alternative to maintaining separate conventional big-block and expensive Hemi programs, but the engine still needed to prove its durability, performance, and production readiness.
The timing worked against it. By the end of the 1960s, rising insurance costs, tightening emissions requirements, and shifting corporate priorities were putting pressure on the American muscle-car market. Chrysler discontinued the A279 development program before the Ball-Stud Hemi could become a production engine. Accounts of the project describe a small prototype run, with only a handful of engines surviving after the program ended, although exact production and survival totals are difficult to establish. The engine in the photograph therefore represents more than an unusual Chrysler prototype. It embodies an alternative direction the company explored: a Hemi designed not just for maximum performance but for easier packaging, lower manufacturing costs, and broader use across the lineup. The project never reached showrooms, leaving the Ball-Stud Hemi as a fascinating example of how engineering ambitions can be defeated by timing and economics before a design gets the chance to prove itself.

China may build villages near the LAC, but infrastructure alone cannot change territorial realities or settle border disputes. 🇮🇳
India is strengthening its border villages through the Vibrant Villages Programme, improving connectivity, facilities and security. Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India, and its people and borders remain vital to our national interest.
Strong infrastructure, vigilant forces and resilient border communities are key to safeguarding India’s frontiers. 🇮🇳💪
