We will never forget. #katrina
ON THIS DATE IN 2005: This statement was issued by NWS meteorologist Robert Ricks (from the Slidell office) at mid-morning on August 28, 2005. At the time, Katrina was a category five hurricane in the Gulf, similar in strength to Camille in 1969. It would make landfall the next day as a category three at Waveland Mississippi. Some thought this “doomsday” statement was a hoax. Unfortunately, it wasn’t... as everyone would find out the next day.

What the @AlabamaWXNet will do... Provide live, long form coverage when a tornado warning is issued for any of the 67 Alabama counties in Alabama. No part of the state will be ignored; it doesn't matter if you live in a city, or way out in the country. We will also go live for other high impact weather events like hurricanes, floods, winter storms, etc. What the @AlabamaWXNet won't do... Scare you with endless hyperbole during routine weather days, or post long range model nonsense about hurricanes, tornadoes, or winter storms 2 weeks in advance that never happen. There will be no "code red weather emergency days" for a day with a high of 90 degrees, fog, or some rain. Strongly worded language will only be used when it is appropriate. We are straight shooters. It all begins August 11!

An old favorite from Christmas Eve on Coden Beach in Coden, Alabama. Too tired to shoot something new. Merry Christmas, @spann @NWSMobile @csmonitor @CDispatch @surattb and all my other favorite people.

TIMES DO GET BETTER: Not everyone is happy at Christmas. For some, it is the first Christmas without a loved one. For others, they are under financial strain, or dealing with behavioral health issues in their families. Some are just lonely with no family left. Maybe you are just physically and emotionally exhausted, and are simply trying to find the magic of this season you knew from childhood. For those that are struggling, times do get better. I am not working the TV shift this week; taking some time to spend with family. I took this photo this evening looking southwest from our home. We get a marvelous sunset view. But, you see, it wasn’t always this way. The southwest view was basically blocked by hundreds of trees until March 25, 2021, when an EF-3 tornado tore through and hit our home. Damage was widespread, and it was a rough road for a while. But, times did get better, and now we get the blessing of seeing the sunset after the tornado. This view is just a happy reminder of this marvelous season for me. Just understand your challenging times won’t last forever, and one day soon you will have something like this to be thankful for despite the pain you feel today.

Shoutout to @WHCCpro for outstanding service. My customer ordered a print last week for Christmas. WHCC had it in her hands in TWO DAYS. She said: “The print is perfect!! The pictures don’t do it justice…I have really studied it and the tones and contrast are beautiful!!”

Beautiful tribute from @NOAA_HurrHunter who earlier this evening honored longtime radar scientist and researcher Peter Dodge who passed away in March 2023. His ashes were dropped in the eye of Category 5 Milton tonight – PETER DODGE HX SCI (1950-2023) 387TH PENNY

When @penguinrandom sends you books because your photo is on the cover, but your cats are more excited about the cool box. (Scarlett sends her thanks!)

.@spann It’s a beautiful day on Dauphin Island. The Alabama-Mississippi Gulf Coast was fortunate to be on the west side of Hurricane Helene. We pray for our neighbors in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. The Southeast was devastated by this storm.

I'm not sure if these are stratus clouds, altostratus clouds, or something else, but they made for a spectacular sunset in Bayou La Batre this evening. @spann @NWSMobile @AlanSealls #alwx
