Our thanks to @AndyMcDonaldMP who highlighted the lack of neurorehabilitation beds at James Cook Hospital during Prime Ministers Question Time yesterday. There is a national shortage of Neurorehabilitation inpatient provision. In 2018 the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Acquired Brain Injury's Time for Change report stated that 14,600 beds were needed of 4,600 available at that time. It is likely the situation is now worse. Neurorehabilitation is noted to be one of the most costs effective interventions available to the NHS with positive financial impacts on both health and social care. There is evidence that rehabilitation for patients with complex disabilities represents value for money. A recent study showed for every dollar spent on inpatient rehabilitation in this cohort, an estimated $A91 was saved in ongoing care costs.
