The pool scene from “Something's Got to Give” (1962) is one of the most famous in film history, showing Marilyn Monroe performing completely nude - a first for a major American star since the pre-Code era. Monroe was hoping to divert attention from from rival Elizabeth Taylor, who was enjoying huge press coverage at the time. Shot on the 23rd May, 1962, photographer Lawrence Schiller was on set to capture high-resolution production stills. When Monroe surfaced from the water and posed on the pool’s edge, Schiller's photographs were soon on the covers of major magazines around the world. Little good did it do her. 20th Century Fox was virtually bankrupt and Marilyn had been suffering from sinusitis and high fevers, causing frequent production delays. Fox fired the actress a few weeks later and sued for breach of contract. Despite co-star Dean Martin refusing to complete the film without her, forcing the studio to rehire Monroe, she died on the 5th August, before filming could resume.
