The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed: Holy Mother Church, which has just celebrated with due praise all her children who are rejoicing in heaven, hastens to intercede with God for the souls of all who have gone before us with the sign of faith, and have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection. She intercedes also on behalf of all those from the foundation of the world whose faith is known to the Lord alone, that purged from the taint of sin, and having entered the company of the citizens of heaven, they may be found worthy to rejoice in the vision of eternal beatitude.
May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Empowering New York Families: NYS Bishops’ statement on @GovKathyHochul opting in to Federal Scholarship Tax Credit
By opting in to the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, Governor Kathy Hochul is helping to empower New York families to provide the best education for their children, regardless of income or where they choose to send their children to school, at no additional cost to the state.
We are sincerely grateful and we applaud her decision to put New York’s kids first.
The new program provides a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit up to $1,700 for individual tax filers and $3,400 for joint filers for gifts to qualified scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) that support children’s educational activities. These SGOs help families of children in public, religious, independent, and charter schools with expenses such as tuition, after-school enrichment programs, tutoring, special needs services, transportation, uniforms, books and supplies, and equipment.
With many New Yorkers struggling to afford basic necessities, these scholarships are a critical lifeline. But because the federal legislation requires state governors to opt in to the program, New York’s participation was no sure thing. Governor Hochul understands that this program does not take a single dollar from public school education funding and it will help thousands of families. Rather than sending this money out of state, she has chosen to keep it in New York to help New York’s kids. While such a decision is common sense from a policy perspective, it nevertheless required political courage and will.
A rising tide lifts all boats, and our expectation is that the new tax credit will spur significant giving to new and pre-existing SGOs that provide scholarships to students in our state’s Catholic schools, as well as to SGOs that provide critical support to students in public schools. We thank the Governor for her support, and we encourage New Yorkers to learn more about this important effort.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service issued proposed regulations to implement the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit under section 25F, commonly known as the Education Freedom Tax Credit, the first federal tax credit supporting private contributions for K-12 scholarships.
Under the proposed regulations, eligible taxpayers may claim an annual credit of up to $1,700 for qualifying contributions, or up to $3,400 for married couples filing jointly. Treasury and the IRS also issued companion temporary regulations to establish key procedures for states and Scholarship Granting Organizations to prepare for the launch of the tax credit on January 1, 2027.
The proposed regulations advance the Administration’s priorities of expanding educational freedom, restoring parental rights, returning power to the states, and putting American students first.

“We must continue to support pregnant and parenting mothers in need and offer spiritual and emotional help to all who have participated in abortion,” said Bishop Daniel E. Thomas, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, marking the 53rd anniversary of the decision by the Supreme Court of the United States in Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion nationwide. Noting there have been several pro-life victories since Roe was overturned in 2022, he cautioned that human life is still gravely threatened by legalized abortion as it continues to be aggressively promoted at the state and federal level.
