The Dutch Economy remains robust, growing 0.6% last quarter and 2.1% year-over-year. Growth driven largely by the machine industry (e.g. ASML), alongside higher consumer and government spending. The IMF raised its forecasts as The Netherlands successfully navigates global unrest.

Gold broke 3,900 and silver broke 50 on Friday. The sellers RAN.
The metal didn't. Hong Kong shipped 75 tonnes of gold to the mainland in September, a five-month high and more than three times a year earlier.
This week's Nugget follows it east.

FT - October 23- The next big resource shock
"The metal’s superb conductivity makes it central to almost every part of the low-carbon energy story, from solar panels to electric cars. Copper is vital to AI data centres too — for both the equipment inside them and the power that keeps them running. Ditto, the increasingly high-tech military kit that governments are racing to procure in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
"Copper demand, in short, is embarking on an epic climb. And the supply outlook is nowhere near keeping pace.
"In a report this week, researchers at BloombergNEF set out the scale of the copper problem, warning of a “massive long-term shortage” beginning in 2028. Projected supply is set to undershoot demand by 8 per cent in 2035, and 44 per cent in 2050.
"The research follows similar warnings of big impending supply deficits from other sources including the International Energy Agency.
"Jonathan Price, chief executive of the major copper producer Teck, gave an even starker forecast at last week’s FT Live Metals and Mining Summit, predicting a supply shortage of about 30 per cent in 2035.
"Why aren’t miners increasing supply to meet demand? Part of the problem, Price noted, is how long it takes this sector to do such a thing. “It can take six months to build a data centre,” he said. “It can take 15 years to discover, permit and build a new mine.”
"In fact, many copper miners are struggling just to maintain production at their existing sites, many of which have been in operation for decades and are faced with declining ore quality. Relative to the scale of demand, they’re bringing precious few new “greenfield” mines into production, having cut back work to find and develop them over the past couple of decades.
"While the supply squeeze has yet to bite in earnest, copper prices have already been on an exuberant run: last month the price on the London Metal Exchange reached a new record of $14,875 per tonne, up 76 per cent since the start of 2024."
"If copper demand grows as strongly as is projected, this could be just a foretaste of the price rises to come. Price sounded pleased about this prospect, saying the supply-demand mismatch made for a 'very constructive long-term market outlook.' "

2/ Bull markets in gold miners are spectacular. Bear markets are brutal: a passive miner strategy suffered a max drawdown of -82.5% since 1971. That’s why we say: gold miners are not a buy & hold investment. They need active management.

Silver broke through $50 after 45 years. Then the buying frenzy began.
Physical shortages. Dealers rationing supply. Speculators piling in at $80, $90, even $100.
I spoke with Amy Rotman at Mining.com.au about what drove the rush.

Mines are getting harder to run, and executives rank that as the industry’s biggest risk for 2027.
EY says aging mines and depleting reserves are making new deposits harder to mine and process.
Regulatory delays are the top contributor, followed by variability in reserve grades at 29%.
With capital harder to secure, 44% of miners are pursuing funding from original equipment manufacturers and 39% from sovereign wealth funds.
Governments are stepping in too, with public critical mineral financing commitments more than quadrupling between 2023 and 2025, to about $65 billion.

The number of nasty, angry, vicious messages over the past hours is not something I have seen in years. Since sub $2K gold and near $20 silver.
Emotions are very strong right now. Fear is 3 x more powerful than Greed (market energy wise). This is a painful consolidation in a much larger secular bull market.
Next week is US elections, the restart of WW3 in the Middle East (?), and no end in sight to the disastrous fiscal, political, cultural, debt crises facing the U.S… and much of the world.
As much as I pray for peace and stability, fixing this underlying disasters, I see little of this in the current chaos, just more of an acceleration of instabilities. A lot of risks and a lot of trust being lost in the system, its debts and its currencies… deteriorating over many years, decades and will take many more years to play out.
A lot is at play and will take place over the coming months. The drivers for gold remain very positive. Only a massive general liquidity crisis is going to seriously sink the prices from here. The general markets do look to be facing a larger sell-off at the moment too. Gold and silver may have been leading indicators again. They will likely reverse the first if a general market panic sell off ensues.
At the moment, conditions appear to be that of price and emotional capitulation. Strong fundamentals will exert themselves over the market, the panicked sellers and arrogant shorts are positioning the market for a strong snap back higher.

UBS projects silver at $70 an ounce by December, $75 by mid-2027 and $80 by September 2027.
The bank projects a sixth consecutive annual deficit for the silver market in 2026.
Analysts in a Reuters poll expect silver to average $66.75 in 2027, down from this year’s forecast of $70.30.
They cite weakening photovoltaic demand, substitution in manufacturing and cautious investment sentiment after this year’s swings.

I have known Ed for over 20 years. One of the best precious metals analysts out there ..
‘He believes the decades-long suppression of precious metals prices is nearing its end’
Next year might be spectacular again ..
Silver has plunged from $120 to around $50, and precious metals analyst Ed Steer says the latest selloff is unlike anything he has seen in 25 years. The biggest commercial traders on COMEX have barely reduced their massive short positions despite the dramatic price declines, an unusual development Steer believes could signal a powerful rally ahead. He says managed money traders are approaching historically rare bearish positioning in silver, a setup that has preceded major rallies in the past. Steer is also watching hundreds of thousands of gold call options with strike prices reaching $20,000, warning that a major financial, monetary, or military event could trigger an extraordinary move higher. He believes the decades-long suppression of precious metals prices is nearing its end and expects gold and silver to eventually break to new highs.

Some loose thoughts on the current macro setup and what it means for #gold 🧵
Gold is under real pressure. Silver and the miners are underperforming and show no signs of strength yet.
My take: we’ll see a capitulation low over the next few days.

Up to about a fifth in gold, a stock and bond mix earned more for the risk it took, and its worst fall shrank from 27.00% to 21.97%. Past that, risk grew faster than returns.

A flat October for commodities masks a major sector rotation.
Energy surges on continued Middle East tensions, while precious metals and grains struggle.
Energy +100% YTD after losing 10% in 2025. Precious metals -11% after last year's 80% rally.
A reminder of why diversification matters.
