Operation Downfall would have been the most brutal warfare the human species had ever witnessed. It would have made Operation Barbarossa look like bar fight. They knew that if the war was prolonged, Russia would invade northern Japan, then after Japan's inevitable defeat, they would claim territory and abolish the imperial family. This was an intolerable prospect. Surrendering to the Americans was the preferable option because they knew the US would want them as an ally against the expansion of Communism in Asia and would thus be far more merciful, but there were generals who refused. At the same time, America was scrambling for a way to force a surrender without an invasion. That's when the atomic bomb came in. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were enough to convince the pro-war faction to agree to a surrender on the grounds that they could say it was in the face of an overwhelming and unforeseeable force and not a lack of fighting spirit, so they could surrender with the country's honor intact. The mushroom clouds had a silver lining. Over two hundred thousand civilians were killed, but it prevented an invasion that would have killed, by some estimates, over ten million.
