Because the ostensible purpose of nation states is to foster an environment that promotes the general welfare for its citizens. This does not entail forcing them to compete with the Third World on behalf of corporations, which are fictitious persons created by governments.

We aren’t a global economic zone we’re a fucking country.
Americans didn’t spend the last 250 years tilling the soil just to hand the fruits of it to foreigners. I don’t give a fuck how many of them there are.
We don’t owe the rest of the world equal share of the American labor market just bc they want it.

The intellectual case against Marxism was won more than a century ago. The most rigorous and devastating blows came from the Austrian School of economics – but the strange part is that hardly anyone is taught the winning arguments.
Carl Menger’s subjective theory of value, developed in the 1870s, undermined the labour theory of value on which Marx built his entire system. Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk then delivered a systematic demolition of Marx’s economics, exposing the contradictions in the theory of surplus value and the so-called transformation problem. Ludwig von Mises went further still, demonstrating that rational economic calculation is impossible under socialism because without private property and market prices there is no way to allocate resources efficiently. Friedrich Hayek later extended this into the knowledge problem: the information required to run a complex economy is dispersed and cannot be centralised. And Murray Rothbard showed how Marx misunderstood the nature of capitalism by replacing voluntary exchange and entrepreneurial creation with a false theory of exploitation based on labour value and class conflict.
These were not minor objections. They struck at the theoretical foundations of Marxism and, in the case of Mises and Hayek, correctly predicted the chronic waste, shortages, and eventual collapse of socialist economies. History confirmed their arguments on a civilisational scale.
Yet in universities, media and political debate, these critiques remain marginal. Marx is still widely taught as a serious economist and social theorist. His errors are softened, historicised, or treated as interesting starting points. The Austrian responses are rarely given equal weight. Students can pass through entire programmes in the social sciences without encountering Böhm-Bawerk’s critique or Mises’s calculation argument in any depth.
This neglect is not accidental. It reflects a deeper intellectual preference for theories that pathologise markets and legitimise expanded state power. The result is a public discourse that continues to recycle Marxist categories long after their economic foundations were shown to be unsound. The cost of that selective memory is still being paid.

The Socialist movement began to wither after the acceptance by most reputable economists of Dr. von Mises Economic Calculation argument and with the inability of Socialists to refute the irrationality of socialistic economic system.
However, followers of Karl Marx then began attacking the Capitalists who managed the system rather than the rationality of the capitalistic system. Mises writes that “Marxists criticize the achievements of all those who think otherwise by representing them as the venal servants of the bourgeoisie. Marx and Engels never tried to refute their opponents with argument. They insulted, ridiculed, derided, slandered, and traduced them, and in the use of these methods their followers are not less expert. Their polemic is directed never against the argument of the opponent, but always against (their) person.”
Mise also pointed out that Marxists were able to build a wall of prejudice which blocked the way to an unbiased scrutiny of Marxism. “Marxists were able to convince many people (especially females) that any advocate of socialistic measures was looked upon as the friend of the Good, the Noble, and the Moral, as a disinterested pioneer of necessary reforms. In short, as a person who unselfishly serves his own people and all humanity, and above all as a zealous and courageous seeker after truth. But let anyone measure Socialism by the standards of scientific reasoning, and they at once becomes a champion of the evil principle, a mercenary serving the egotistical interests of a class, a menace to the welfare of the community, an ignoramus outside the pale.
For the most curious thing about this way of thinking is that it regards the question, whether Socialism or Capitalism will better serve the public welfare, as settled in advance—to the effect, naturally, that Socialism is considered as good and Capitalism as evil—whereas in fact of course only be a scientific inquiry could the matter be decided.”
Dr. von Mises has made it clear to me that today’s Progressives have completely (and successfully) adopted the Marxists method of dodging any scientific analysis of a Capitalist’s claims by appealing to emotions. This somewhat explains the appeal of socialism to the feminists.

The socialist trick is to declare that someone else's wealth morally belongs to society, demand that they be forced to subsidize your preferred programs, and then call them greedy when they resist being plundered.
Wanting to keep what you earned is greed. Wanting what someone else earned is compassion.

Daniel - great post but the binary nature of the aspect you deliver is imo the problem.
Neither capitalism or socialism as a system has ever actually been tried in its pure form.
And for good reason.
Even Singapore - the poster child for turbo capitalism - has a huge state, massive public housing programme and heavily directed industrial policy.
It’s not capitalism. It’s an extremely well-designed mixed economy.
Here’s the real pattern: capitalism left unchecked always trends toward monopoly. A handful of players capture the market, extract rent, kill competition. Self-interest stops being pro-social and starts being extractive. We’re watching it happen right now - in housing, in finance, in big tech.
Socialism trends toward exactly the same place - just with the state as the monopolist instead of the corporation. Different hands, same problem. Power concentrates. Incentives misalign. The village stops getting fed.
They’re mirror images of each other. Both promise utopia. Both deliver dystopia if taken far enough.
The answer has always been mixed market social democracy. Not as a compromise between two failed systems - but as the only model that’s actually delivered sustained high living standards anywhere on earth.
Scandinavia. Germany. Canada. All mixed economies. All outperforming the ‘pure’ versions on almost every measure.
The real debate isn’t capitalism vs socialism. It’s HOW you design the mixed system. How do you harness self-interest without letting it tip into rent extraction? How do you have a safety net without killing incentive?
That’s the hard question. The binary you employ to make a point here is just a distraction from the real question.

The Department of Justice has issued an opinion to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) that its guidelines about disparate-impact liability under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act are unconstitutional. The Office of Legal Counsel found that EEOC’s guidelines pressured employers to engage in racial discrimination.
"Despite trying to promote equality, EEOC's disparate impact liability interpretation under Title VII actually fosters the very discrimination its guidelines seek to address," said Acting Attorney General @DAGToddBlanche. "This opinion will now allow businesses to hire based on performance, restoring equal opportunities in the American workplace."
