Sometimes I genuinely wonder how certain people become professors.
I recently saw a discussion where a professor said he would only hire PhD students and postdocs who are smarter than him.
Someone responded by questioning why anyone smarter would want to work under him in the first place.
I find that mentality genuinely disturbing.
Since when did academic supervision become a competition to determine who is intellectually superior?
A professor’s responsibility is to recognize talent, provide mentorship, secure resources, and help young researchers become independent scientists.
Your students are not supposed to spend five years proving that you’re smarter than them.
And frankly, if your ego cannot tolerate the possibility that your students might surpass you, perhaps you should reconsider whether you’re suited to mentoring anyone.
The purpose of academia is to advance human knowledge, not to preserve a professor’s position in the intellectual hierarchy.
A great mentor should be proud when their students become better than them.
That’s the whole point of education.

I regret to inform you that regardless of how broken academia is, you are still responsible for what you become during your PhD.
Your advisor can guide you. Your university can give you a degree. Neither can make you an independent thinker.
Stop chasing paper counts. Stop waiting for the perfect research direction. Stop confusing publications with scientific progress.
Stay curious. Question everything. Take ownership of your research.
The goal was never to become a paper-producing machine. It was to become a scientist.

URGENT PUBLIC APPEAL
I never imagined having to make a post like this, but I desperately need your help.
On October 31, while covering a wedding at Oriental Hotel, Lagos, my bag was stolen from inside the bride's room.
The bag contained my MacBook Pro M1 and
FOUR external hard drives holding approximately FIVE weddings yet to be delivered to my clients.
These are not just files. They are people's once in a lifetime memories, months of hard work and my livelihood.
Thankfully, we have obtained CCTV footage showing the individual entering, taking my bag and leaving the hotel.
I'm offering a N500,000 REWARD for credible information leading to the identification of this individual and recovery of my belongings through the appropriate authorities.
Please you can send a message or call this number for any update 09033892670

If you are looking to travel the world for work, conferences, competitions, summits, volunteering, workshops, education, and more across Pakistan, Nigeria, SA, UAE, Nepal, India, Ghana, the UK, the US, and beyond.
I spent hours during the weekend finding companies abroad that are actively hiring and funding and compiled them into one sheet.
Application links, eligibility criteria have been added, so all you have to do is review the sheet and apply.

This is why I don't recommend self-funding Erasmus. If you received only tuition-waiver, REAPPLY. If you have the funds to self-fund, consider switching to a programme at a single institution.
I say this every year, but some don't listen. And as predicted, many end up stranded.

She knows her worth, and there's nothing wrong with that.
You asked her how much she charges, and she told you. If the price is too high for you or doesn't fit your budget, that's absolutely fine.
If you can find someone cheaper, by all means, go for it. Nobody is forcing you to use her services.
It's like asking Veekee James why she's charging ₦15 million for an outfit. If you can't afford that, there are other fashion designers who can make you something for ₦500k or less
Choose whoever works for your budget.
But you can't expect everyone to charge what you can afford. People have different levels of experience, creativity, skills and the quality of work they offer. That's what makes their prices different.
I think most Nigerians overestimate themselves and their skillset. No thanks to social media, people go for interviews with unrealistic salary figures because “I am pricing my worth”
China, India, Philippines and Kenya are becoming global commercial powerhouses because they are leveraging on their low currency to dollar disparity to provide cheaper labour for high currency rate countries in the west. Thereby providing jobs for their people.
But Nigerians want to be paid same wage someone in UK, Europe or the Americas earn simply because “I know my worth”
My Chinese Partner was telling me yesterday there are places in China with average monthly pay of less than $250. India is less than $65. Same with Philipines and Kenya.
Nigeria has a minimum wage of 70,000 Naira which is around $50, international and local companies will price your skillset in your local currency starting from your minimum wage.
Many Nigerians are financially delusional for a people that is the poverty capital of the world with the highest out of school children and the most terrorised country in the world.
Thats how I interviewed a young lady for a part time admin role and she said her salary expectation is 1.5 million naira. For Admin ?? In Nigeria?
For same amount I can get a part time admin here in the UK 25 hours a week.m, and they would pray for me daily cos the job market now in UK is horrible. No jobs.
But a remote worker in Nigeria wants 1.5 million Naira to do a part time admin work.
Everyone wants to rich overnight.
You guys are not serious

I am accepting applications from prospective students either via the 1+3.5 route (masters + PhD) or 3.5 route (PhD only) in comparative and/or environmental politics, to be funded through the North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) competition.
Send me a strong proposal showing:
- your command of the literature
- gaps in the literature
- potential contributions to the literature
- proposed method (causal experiment, and mixed methods preferred as these are often in short supply and encouraged by NWSSDTP)
Send me your proposal and CV.

There is this guy in my church who came to me to ask for my number about two weeks ago because he needed me to get something done for him. I punched my number onto his phone and I asked him to call or text me so I can be able to get his number too. By the time I got home, I saw a WhatsApp message from a 234 number, and he said that was his number. I just ignored him. I didn't even reply and I'd never save that number into my contact list.
Dude has been in the UK for four years now and he is still giving his Nigerian number to people in the UK with him. Or is it because I'm a Nigerian like him that he was texting me with his 234 WhatsApp number? I know he would not do that if it was a Brit that he had exchanged a contact with. Except for my very close friends and family members, I don't entertain any 234 messages on my 447 line. Let 234 messages be directed to my 234 number, biko.
