"If your throughput is 50% slower, you get fired [...] If your reliability is 50%, 60%, 70%, you don't even get a sales call." @RajatBhageria, Founder & CEO of @ChefRobotics, has a different perspective on the current humanoid robotics race. The industry is betting heavily on general-purpose robots. The assumption is that once a robot can perform almost any task, we've solved robotics. But industrial customers have different priorities. In manufacturing, throughput and reliability determine whether a robot makes it onto the factory floor. A robot that performs 100 different tasks at 70% reliability may be less valuable than one that performs a single task at 99.9%. Rajat argues that performance and reliability matter more than task generalization in industrial applications. We discussed this and much more on the 22Astronauts Podcast. This episode is brought to you by @CoreWeave, providing the specialized cloud infrastructure that powers physical AI and large-scale model training. @ChefRobotics is the last food robotics company from the late 2010's that is still standing—or rather, thriving. So what did @RajatBhageria do differently? He says customers come first. "Understand the customer pain points, and go from there." "Honestly, I have a good enough intuition of engineering to hire people to be able to build a product and get venture capital." "BUT, if the customers don't want it, you're screwed." "And there's an opportunity cost to everything: like, should I even spend my mental energy doing this thing for the next X years unless customers desperately want this thing?"

As a founder and VC, I often feel a contradiction between the irrational, optimistic part of my brain (the founder mindset) and the analytical, risk-averse part (the VC mindset). I spoke with @tarunjg24 about how embracing this contradiction helped me build a successful business.

Excited to speak at @TechCrunch Disrupt this October about product-market fit with @annbordetsky from NEA and @12muralij from ICONIQ (more on the agenda: techcrunch.com/2025/06/23/te…) This topic means a lot to me personally because it played a huge role in my founder journey at Chef.

I chatted with @operationdanish on the @MarioNawfal show about the real-world impact of robotics beyond fancy demos.
🚨 UNCANNY VALLEY: 52 MILLION MEALS AND COUNTING – HOW CHEF ROBOTICS IS THE FUTURE OF AUTOMATION The robotics revolution isn’t coming… it’s already here. In this episode of Uncanny Valley, @OperationDanish sits down with @ChefRobotics founder @RajatBhageria to unpack how task-specific robots are moving off the lab bench and into real factories - starting with food. From automating food assembly to deploying robots at scale across North America, Chef is proving that reliable, high-utilization robotics is no longer a science project. This is the blueprint for real-world automation – built for production, not demos. Forget the hype. This is what real AI in the real world looks like. 00:15 – Why food assembly was the right robotic problem to solve 02:48 – 52M meals, robots across US and Canada, real ROI 05:23 – “Optimus doesn’t need to cook your food, and Chef doesn’t need to drive your Tesla.” 06:55 – Why humanoids can’t compete on cost or utilization 13:34 – YouTube demos ≠ training data 17:11 – The problem with teleop and brittle RL pipelines 24:40 – Selling robots before building them: the Chef playbook 31:37 – What AI-native startups can learn from RaaS 34:22 – “Is robotics hot again?” The funding cycles & investor fatigue 40:47 – Why vertical wins must come before infrastructure 42:35 – The #1 predictor of robotics startup success 45:42 – Passion vs delusion: what really drives hard-tech founders 50:53 – High-throughput robotics and the case for food 56:18 – How Chef is using diffusion policy and imitation learning 59:56 – Why robotics will scale now, even if the tech hasn’t changed

Food service and food production industries are facing the #1 labor shortage in the US according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. @ChefRobotics is tackling this problem by supporting food companies to increase production volume through flexible robotics and AI. We are excited to have @vinnysenthil, Senior Software Engineer at Chef Robotics, at #Actuate2025 to talk about the challenges in automating food production and how Chef has gotten their robots to solve this challenge in production. Join us in San Francisco, September 23rd & 24th, to hear from Vinny and many other robotics developers at Actuate! Tickets on sale now: hubs.li/Q03t3z1f0

Big news - the @ChefRobotics robot is now NSF-certified! This certification means that our robot is food-safe, sanitary, and easy to clean (all essential for food manufacturing equipment).

Chef robots can now scoop curries with meat suspended in them! Why is that a big deal? Curries (especially those with chunks of meat) are incredibly hard for machines to scoop accurately and consistently, and place cleanly without spilling.

Had a great conversation with Insha Naureen from @FoodIng1st about how robotics and AI are changing food manufacturing and helping us solve labor problems (especially in food assembly, which accounts for 60-70% of food production labor): foodingredientsfirst.com/new…

How do you decide on your next role? For me it comes down to 3 things: 1. Success: Will the company you're working at succeed massively? 2. Team: Will you work with smart and driven people? 3. Product: Will you work on a technically complex product that solves a need?
