The earliest item with moving parts @NewberryLibrary is a devotional manuscript (Vault Case MS 37.5, c. 1400) with a detachable volvelle bookmark. Turn the dial from Roman Numerals I-IV to specify a text column and move it up and down the string to show where you left off!

Nancy Green, 1st woman to portray Aunt Jemima, lived here on S. Indiana Avenue. Born enslaved in KY in 1834, came to Chicago with a white family. First appeared as Aunt Jemima at 1893 World’s Fair, continued until her death in 1923. (Hit by a car around the corner on 46th St.)

The next sacred space on the #MostEndangeredList is the St. Michael the Archangel Church, one of many churches threatened with closure by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Congregants built this Gothic Revival Church between 1907 and 1909, designed by Architect William J. Brinkmann.
