From my family to yours, I wish you a very happy Christmas.
This is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Christmas story, and the Christian values that define it.
Let’s look forward and celebrate the joy and hope that Christmas brings.

Horrendous to emerge from the peace of church this morning to news of the Bondi Beach attack. Praying for all those involved & for all our Jewish brothers and sisters marking Chanukah, light in a dark world.

Taking children out of poverty and sub-standard accommodation is a moral good and what a Labour Government should do.
🚨 NEW: The Government has published its Child Poverty Strategy to lift 550,000 children "out of poverty" by 2030
- Cap hotel type B&B use for homeless families at six weeks
- Invest £8m to cut emergency B&B placements in 20 councils
- Extend Universal Credit to cover childcare costs for all children in larger families
- Invest £950m to deliver 5000 better temporary homes by 2030
- Pay childcare upfront for parents on Universal Credit who are starting work
- Create a legal duty for councils to alert schools GPs and health visitors when a child is placed in temporary accommodation
- Let families use vouchers loyalty points and gift cards to buy infant formula
- End the two child benefit cap
- Track deep material poverty for the first ever time to show how many children are missing essentials like three meals a day or a home free from damp

Every church leader & community volunteer I know has anecdotes about the depth of child poverty. This might feel like one for the data nerds, but it will be hugely powerful in policy terms.
Replying to @ChrLeft
The pledge to collect data tracking deep material poverty will put numbers to the reality that our members – through churches, community work, education and beyond – are all too well aware of, and better enable policy to meet the challenge of eradicating it. (3/4)

Replying to @KemiBadenoch
@KemiBadenoch has taken only a partial Christian theological view. Of course we’re all responsible for ourselves & our families. But Christian theology extends that to our neighbours and even to strangers. Social security ensures we can do this at a societal level.
I wrote for @Christianitymag this week on what I think Badenoch & Cates get wrong about (what the Bible says about) the relationship between the church and the welfare state: premierchristianity.com/opin…

Gordon's voice on this has been one of the most influential interventions by any former PM ever. Monumental.
Gordon Brown: The two-child benefit cap was a scar on the country’s soul
By abolishing the cap, Rachel Reeves will lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty

WE WON 💥 The two-child benefit limit is GONE! This will pull 470,000 children out of severe hardship by 2027.
This is a massive victory for families, campaigners, and every one of you that played your part urging the Chancellor to act.

Labour needs to come out today and outline unequivocally that this is the right thing to do for our children - our future generation of contributors. #Scrapthetwochildlimit

✍️NEW on the Mainstream blog:
As the Budget looms, Labour have lost the art of making the moral case for policy - but this could change with the two-child benefit limit, writes @ChrLeft Director @hannahmerich.

Children don’t choose the family they are born into. Every child, regardless of circumstance, should have the best chance to succeed in life. Eliminating child poverty should be a priority of any government. We urge the Chancellor to take steps to lift children out of poverty at.
Ahead of the Budget, we’re praying and advocating for choices that lift children out of poverty and strengthen families. Our statement today reflects our hope for a fairer economy shaped by justice and compassion.

The attack on a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, is horrific.
Our prayers are with the victims, their families and with the Jewish community across Britain.
We must stand against Anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred in our society.

I’m appalled by the attack at a synagogue in Crumpsall.
The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific.
My thoughts are with the loved ones of all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services and all the first responders.
