A senior at Harvard observes “a narrative emerging among young people that more than just consent is required to make a sex act ethical.”
“In the Cornell Daily Sun, a student says fraternities function as ‘a market, where women are seen as commodities.’”
“A Dartmouth contributor lambasts frat culture where brothers ‘humiliate and degrade’ and that teaches ‘men to treat women and each other like subhuman objects.’”
“The emerging picture is of a sexual ethic that cannot be satisfied simply by one liberal-autonomous agent assenting to the action of another. The new ethic requires upholding the dignity and respect of the human being involved. Respecting women is incompatible with drug-fueled orgies where the ‘shop’ is ‘open,’ regardless of how consensual said orgy may or may not be.”

Everyone begins as a philosopher.
Kids start sincerely asking big questions early. The challenge is helping them retain that sincerity and urgency.
(And you’re going to be doing philosophy anyway when you do lit, just implicitly)

We need to be reminded again that the ethical standard should not be “minimal consent,” but care and respect. I remember we had a public conversation about this very thing in the advent of @ChristineEmba’s Rethinking Sex.
What she wrote then remains true today:
— “Consent is a legal criterion, not an ethical one.”
— “When we view sex in isolation, as a private activity engaged in to satisfy our own desires, it becomes easier to forget that those outside of us . . . are human, too.”
— “Willing the good of the other was his definition of love.”

Tim's post is spot on. Consent alone is a horrible basis for sexual morality. It's a criminal baseline, not a moral standard. Consent keeps you from being convicted. I don't expect everyone to agree to preserving sex for marriage, but we can and should expect an ethic of actual care as the bare minimum.
