As well as a pillar of human rights abuses and a bastion of repression
I've come back to Egypt again & again, because when this region & our world have faced difficult moments, Egypt has consistently been a pillar of multilateralism, working to open space for diplomacy. At at a time when divisions are deepening, it's critical to keep the channels of diplomacy open.

Truly remarkable that the UN Secretary General traveled to Egypt without speaking out on the ongoing crackdown on independent media in the country. Today, a court convicted @MadaMasr's @Linaattalah after just one kangaroo session and ordered the platform shut down

UPDATE: Lina Attalah has been released. Her detention is part of "an unprecedented escalation" in Egypt's assault on independent media. democracynow.org/2026/10/27/…
A court in Cairo has ordered the closure of the independent Egyptian news site Mada Masr. The court also ordered the site’s editor-in-chief, Lina Attalah, to be detained until she pays a fine of over $50,000. She was convicted on charges of managing an unlicensed website. Mada Masr is “the flagship independent media outlet in Egypt and a pillar of independent media in the region,” says Sharif Abdel Kouddous of Drop Site News, who previously worked at Mada Masr. democracynow.org/2026/10/27/…

Today CBC published an article with the headline: “Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran.” I was intrigued, as there has been almost 0 evidence offered for this claim thus far. Unfortunately this article doesn’t offer any either, adding nothing new. CBC says they spent weeks on the investigation, so these are pretty pitiful results, at least in terms of finding evidence of who paid for the shootings. I’m not sure why they feel comfortable with such a declarative headline given the lack of evidence (other than journalistic standards going out the window when the subject is an Official Enemy country). Also, CBC and other journalists continue platforming police claims that they need backdoor access to messaging apps to solve these shootings, with no push back or critique about how these powers can be abused, including against journalists. cbc.ca/news/investigates/ira…

Apparently the fine has been paid in cash and they are still holding Lina in custody
In a sham proceeding, a Cairo court has fined Mada Masr chief editor @Linaattalah 3 million EGP on charges of operating a website without a license & ordered the closure of Mada Masr, one of Egypt’s last remaining independent media outlets. Lina is detained until the fine is paid

This is really bad. Mada Masr and Lina Attalah have done vital reporting not only on Egypt but also on Gaza, Sudan, and Lebanon. Some of their work was unfortunately overlooked by international media, like their report on Gaza's aid traps, one of the best pieces I've read on it.
Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was fined LE3 million by the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, which convicted her on charges of managing an unlicensed website, issuing an order for the website’s closure. Attalah was taken into custody after the issue of the ruling. Tuesday’s session at the ninth circuit of the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, presided over by judge Mohamed Mubarak, was temporarily suspended for deliberations after Attalah’s defense counsel requested time to review the case file. After the court returned from deliberations, the judge ordered the courtroom cleared of everyone except Attalah and her defense counsel, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights’ executive director Hossam Bahgat, who was also present, told Mada Masr. The room then filled with plainclothes officers and guards, with a National Security Agency officer in attendance, he added. The presiding judge and a Supreme State Security Prosecution representative returned to the session and the judge announced that the court has decided to stand by its rejection of all the procedural arguments presented by the defense, including requests to bring in any documentation or hear any witnesses. The judge then asked the defense team to present its plea. The counsel insisted that it would not submit a plea as long as its requests were unanswered by the court. The judge then abruptly asked for a lawyer unknown to any member of the defense counsel to be brought in, “in a move that astonished all those present,” said Bahgat, and announced that the court decided to appoint a lawyer for Attalah. At that point, all members of the defense counsel cried out to reject the court’s appointment of a lawyer when the eight chosen lawyers were present. Attalah herself spoke to say she did not accept the court-appointed lawyer acting on her behalf, an objection the judge refused to have recorded in the session’s minutes. "In an even more shocking move,” said Bahgat, the judge himself began to log down the requests of the court-appointed lawyer, without the lawyer having said a word. The judge then read out the conviction amid shouts and protests from the defense counsel. The judge sentenced Attalah to the maximum possible penalty: a LE3 million fine, the closure of Mada Masr’s website and the confiscation of its property. Security personnel then surrounded Attalah, lifted her off the ground and took her out of the courtroom, where she remains in custody in the courthouse.

The decision to float after avoiding it for a decade was the least bad option & avoids burning hard currency reserves in a futile fight against inflation. But Egypt's economy is weak & structural problems remain unresolved. The pound will depreciate indefinitely until they are🧵
The Egyptian Pound is falling. That's not a sign of weakness, but a sign of good policy. Oil prices are spiking as fears of another hot war build, so the weaker Pound is offsetting all of that. Egypt deserves huge kudos for letting the Pound float... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/…

The parliament postponed its vote until 26 October, which is an unusual delay for a rubber-stamp legislature. More strikingly, Zawia 3 reported, citing four unnamed diplomatic, intelligence and military sources, that Sisi’s announcement triggered heated disagreements within the National Defense Council, which met on 18 October, a day after his speech. The tensions reportedly centered on Sisi’s act of publicly committing to a military operation before even consulting the council, which includes the army senior brass, intelligence and security chiefs, and top cabinet officials. barracks.substack.com/p/crac…

The court has suspended the session in which Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah’s first hearing on charges of managing an unlicensed website is taking place, with proceedings set to resume later today. The session’s suspension came after the judge had requested during proceedings that the defense counsel review the case file while the session was ongoing. The counsel refused the request, asking that they be given sufficient time to review the case documents. The judge repeated his request that they review the case file during the session, saying that “the case is simple” and that the charge is the straightforward question of managing a website without a license. The session is being held at the ninth circuit of the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, presided over by judge Mohamed Mubarak. At the start of the session, after the judge presented to Attalah the Supreme State Security Prosecution’s charges, he asked the editor-in-chief if the website was unlicensed at the time of the prosecution’s investigations on October 21. She responded by stressing that she had applied for a license and never received a response. Before the session began, journalists present at the courthouse were barred from entering to attend the trial, among them Iman Ouf, the Journalists Syndicate’s Freedoms Committee head. Court security asked the journalists gathered outside to hand over their syndicate membership cards, saying the presiding judge wanted to check on those present “name by name.” They later returned the cards without letting anyone in. Mada Masr’s defense lawyers had asked the judge for full access to evidence in the case, including the facts of the licensing procedures and related notifications, details of the charges Attalah is accused of and the time period over which it is alleged that the crime took place, as well as access to all documentation regarding Mada Masr’s licensing application held by the Supreme Media Regulatory Council.

My thoughts more coherently:
I hope Im wrong but the fact that Sisi asked parliament approval to support Saudi militarily indicates that Egypt’s involvment is expected to be qualitatively significant(unlike the equally shameful but ‘symbolic’ support to UAE). Covering all potential legal accountability bases
