The recurring fire incidents in high-density commercial markets like Gaffar Market and Karol Bagh raise some fundamental questions:
1. Why are we not strengthening the firefighting infrastructure and emergency response capacity in such high-risk markets?
2. Why are shops and commercial establishments not being directed to prepare and submit their own Disaster Management Plans (DMPs) to the respective authorities?
3. Why are Self-Glowing Evacuation Maps not being made mandatory so that people can find evacuation routes even in smoke-filled buildings?
4. Why are regular fire safety training programmes, emergency response teams and mock drills not institutionalised in these markets?
Preparedness must begin much before an incident. Authorities are required to issue directives only and let these commercial markets hire experts for DRR.
What we are witnessing in Delhi three major fire and elsewhere is largely not the result of natural disasters. These are man-made, preventable disasters, arising from gaps in planning, enforcement, infrastructure and preparedness.
Thanks to @DelFireService saves lives during these incidents, but @DDMA_official prevents incidents from turning into tragedies.

India’s agriculture depends heavily on rain, but instead of a blessing, it often turns into havoc because rainfall is not being managed.
Heavy rains cause #floods, #waterlogging, and soil erosion, while deficient rains bring #droughts. This not only destroys crops but also disrupts farmers’ livelihoods and impacts the whole economy.
