THREAD 🧵 | NOW OR NEVER: The 1933 Pamphlet That Gave Pakistan Its Name
1
165
On 14–15 August 1947, Pakistan emerged as an independent state following the Partition of British India. However, the Pakistan that came into existence was not geographically identical to Rahmat Ali's original proposal. Punjab and Bengal were partitioned, while Kashmir became a disputed territory.

The historical significance of "Now or Never" goes beyond the invention of a name. It reflects the transformation of political ideas about identity, federalism, territorial nationalism and self-determination during the final decades of British rule. A four-page pamphlet published in Cambridge in 1933 became an important document in understanding the ideological history of Partition. History is not shaped by events alone. Sometimes, it begins with an idea written on paper. #IndianHistory #PartitionOfIndia #UPSC #ModernHistory

What holds up even the gods? In the Rig Veda, Indra reigns supreme. But the Atharvaveda points to something greater, a power that sustains Indra, Agni, Soma, and every other deity. Its name: स्कम्भ 📜 Source: अथर्ववेद, काण्ड 10, सूक्त 7 and 8 🏛️ Meaning: स्कम्भ = स्तम्भ, the cosmic pillar It holds द्यौ (heaven) and पृथ्वी (earth) apart and keeps them in place. 🧠 Why it stands out: • The gods exist within स्कम्भ, not above it • Everything rests on it: तप, ऋत, सत्य, प्राण, काल • The hymn keeps asking: "Which part of Skambha supports what?" • A major step from polytheism toward monism ⚡ UPSC punch line: स्कम्भ = the seed of ब्रह्मन् The roots of the Upanishadic Brahman are visible right here. 📝 Mains angle (GS1): When arguing that the Atharvaveda is more than charms and spells, cite the स्कम्भ सूक्त as evidence of serious philosophy. 🧩 Memory trick: पुरुष → creation through sacrifice हिरण्यगर्भ → creation from a golden womb नासदीय → creation as an open question स्कम्भ → the foundation of creation 💬 Comment below: which Vedic creation hymn fascinates you the most?

3,000 years old. Still asked in UPSC. The Nadistuti Sukta in one post. 🔖 Bookmark it, UPSC 2027 aspirants. One hymn. 19 rivers. 3,000+ years old. Rigveda 10.75, the Nadistuti Sukta, is a Vedic poet's river map of the world he knew. 📍 Verse 5: walk west from the Ganga Ganga → Yamuna → Sarasvati → Shutudri (Sutlej) → Parushni (Ravi) → Asikni (Chenab) → Vitasta (Jhelum) (Opens in a new tab +3) Marudvridha, Arjikiya and Sushoma are also named. Scholars still argue about who they are. 🧩 📍 Verse 6: the north-west frontier Kubha (Kabul), Gomati (Gomal) and Krumu (Kurram). The Vedic world reached into today's Afghanistan, not just the Gangetic plain. 👑 The real star is the Sindhu (Indus) Other rivers rush to it like mothers to their calves, and it leads them like a warrior king leading his army. (intratext) 🎯 UPSC angle Prelims loves the firm matches (Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum, Kabul, Gomal, Kurram) and the Sarasvati debate. In Mains, use this hymn to argue that Early Vedic geography centred on the north-west.

UPSC ASPIRANTS BOOKMARK THIS!!!!! GET MARKS IN 2027 PRE!! Macaulay is usually tied to his 1835 Minute on Education, but his more important legacy is merit-based open competition for the civil service. Timeline 1813: Lord Grenville proposed replacing patronage with "impartial selection" through public examination. 1833: Macaulay argued for competition in appointments. Parliament allowed only a restricted form: 4 nominees per vacancy, with 1 chosen by exam. The Directors resisted and the experiment stalled. 1853 Charter Act: Ended the Directors' monopoly over appointments and opened the way to open competition. 1854 Macaulay Committee: Recommended an open exam testing broad learning, with a published ranking. This design is still familiar today. 1855: First competitive exam, held in London. Recruits were nicknamed "competition-wallahs" (George Otto Trevelyan).

UN Secretary-General António Guterres (31 Oct 2026) says housing is foundational to tackling inequality and speeding up sustainable development. More than 3 billion people lack adequate housing, and he urges cities everywhere to invest in housing for all. UPSC linkages SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities, with Target 11.1 on adequate, safe and affordable housing and upgrading slums by 2030. Right to housing: Recognised in the UDHR (Art. 25) and ICESCR (Art. 11). In India it is read into Article 21 (right to shelter) through cases like Olga Tellis (1985) and Chameli Singh (1996). Inequality link: Housing costs, informal settlements and unequal land access feed wealth and opportunity gaps, which ties in with your earlier Gini index topic. India schemes: PMAY-Urban (and PMAY-U 2.0), PMAY-Gramin, Affordable Rental Housing Complexes, Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT. Challenges: Slums, land titling disputes, high land prices, weak urban planning, climate-vulnerable housing, and the gap between housing supply and affordability. UN-Habitat: The UN agency for sustainable urbanisation, headquartered in Nairobi, which anchors World Cities Day. Mains angle: "Housing is not just shelter but a gateway to dignity, health, education and livelihood." Use it as a line in answers on urbanisation, inequality or SDGs.

WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin No. 22 (released Oct 2026): UPSC quick notes Key figures (2025) CO₂: 426.8 ppm, about 153% of the 1750 pre-industrial level Methane (CH₄): 1948 ppb, about 267% of the 1750 level Nitrous oxide (N₂O): 339.1 ppb, about 126% of the 1750 level
Concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in our atmosphere are higher than ever before. The WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin reports on the amount of gas that accumulates in the atmosphere, not new annual emissions. Explore the findings: bit.ly/4iIqwMR

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗖𝗢₂. Record Highs, Rising Stakes: What the WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin Tells Us The atmosphere has once again broken its own record. According to the World Meteorological Organization's latest Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, carbon dioxide reached 426.8 parts per million in 2025, about 153% of its pre-industrial level. Methane and nitrous oxide also touched new highs. The message is blunt: the planet is still loading its atmosphere faster than it can clean it. Concentration, not just emissions The Bulletin measures what accumulates in the atmosphere, not what is emitted in a given year. Roughly half of each year's CO₂ stays aloft, while land and oceans absorb the rest. This is why the problem is so stubborn. Because CO₂ lasts for decades to centuries, today's emissions commit the planet to warming long after they stop. A mixed signal The 2025 rise of 2.8 ppm was smaller than the surge of 2023-24, when El Niño-driven drought and wildfires weakened natural carbon sinks. Their partial recovery explains the dip. But WMO cautions against comfort: a developing El Niño and continued fossil fuel use point to further increases in 2026. Meanwhile, CO₂ growth rates have roughly tripled since the 1960s. New warning signs The Bulletin also flags two lesser-known gases tied to the energy transition. Sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆), used in electricity distribution, lasts over a thousand years and is about 24,300 times more potent than CO₂. Its levels hit a record in 2025. Hydrogen, hailed as a clean fuel, is not a greenhouse gas itself, but leakage affects atmospheric chemistry and can indirectly add to warming. The lesson is that decarbonisation must be monitored, not assumed. What it means for India and the world For India, the findings sit at the crossroads of ambition and vulnerability. The country is scaling renewables and green hydrogen while remaining highly exposed to heatwaves, erratic monsoons and floods. Methane from agriculture and waste makes sector-specific action essential. Strong monitoring, cleaner farming practices, leak-proof hydrogen infrastructure and climate finance are no longer optional extras. The way ahead With COP31 in Antalya from 9-20 November 2026, negotiators have the science in front of them. The task is to turn pledges into verifiable action. Every year of delay adds to a burden that future generations cannot easily undo. The atmosphere keeps honest accounts. The only question is whether we will.
