Yesterday evening, 4 November, as President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) ACT Branch, I had the pleasure of hosting Lawrence Meredith, the EU Ambassador to Australia. He not only convincingly discussed the shared values and interests between Australia and the EU, but also of the great benefits that the recently signed Australia-EU FTA would bring to both parties. Thank you Lawrence for delivering a great event!

Finally, an Indian having the gall of speaking the truth. Indian Airforce got pummeled by the Pakistan Airforce on the morning of 6 May, and received the shock of its life. The Godi media tried to cleanse the narrative and spun stories to deceive the public and largely succeeded in doing so. But deep down, both the Indian government and the Indian military know the trial by fire they went through against Pakistan. @majorgauravarya @GeneralBakshi @IAF_MCC @Kanthaswam80359
I think we lost the Air Battle and lost a lot of aircraft against 🇵🇰 on 6-7 May 2025 I think 90% of Sindoor Narrative by India is doubtful now. Modi did the same thing against General MM Narvane too after the Galwan conflict He didn't nominate MMN for CDS which was assumed to be routine by then Otherwise why should he humiliate someone who destroyed 11 Pakistani Air Bases and did so much damage to Pakistan? The man should be a national hero and Modi should have attended his farewell himself right ?

Last year I was attacked in Paris by a pro-Hamas hate mob. They were screaming “F*** Israel, F*** USA”. This hate and violence was spreading like wildfire. And now, the same mob is waving the same flags and chanting the same chants while Paris burns. This was never just about Israel. It was never just about Jews. This is a war on the West and the freedom and values we hold dear. I said it then and I’ll say it again: wake up. This has to be stopped.

BREAKING: UN torture expert denounces colleagues Francesca Albanese and Reem Alsalem for denying October 7 atrocities and ignoring Hamas torture of Israeli hostages: “My colleagues said nothing. I felt ashamed. Their one-sided, vitriolic reports added to families’ anguish.”
Dr. Alice Jill Edwards: “The UN had done so little to help them... I felt ashamed. I am still outraged that UN special rapporteurs Francesca Albanese and Reem Alsalem never formally documented these horrors. Instead, both have continued to issue a stream of what I regard as one-sided and vitriolic reports, and hard-to-justify excuses for their lack of attention. That, families and returned hostages have told me, only added to their anguish.”

Horrified by the attempt to assassinate an Australian politician by vehicular ramming, a method of terror seen in Europe and the US. The carefree Australia we grew up in, of overwhelming safety and civility is fading. What we call social cohesion is teetering. Strong leadership, law enforcement, effective institutions and a personal commitment to stand up to hatred and incitement and to practise empathy and kindness is the only way through this. Wishing a full recovery to Ms Haines in body and soul and strength to her loved ones.

Dorsa Derakhshani (b. 1998) an Iranian-American chess International Master and Woman Grandmaster who was banned by Iran in 2017 for competing without a hijab, leading her to move to the United States and rebuild her career.... She was just ten years old when a stranger stopped her on the street in Tehran and cut off her hair because her hijab had slipped. Nobody protected her that day, but she did not let fear stop her from growing into an extraordinary talent. By the time Dorsa Derakhshani was a teenager, she had already won national and international chess titles, earning the prestigious honors of Woman Grandmaster and International Master. She was becoming one of the brightest young minds in Iranian sports, yet the same strict system was watching every move she made. In 2017, when she was eighteen years old, Dorsa traveled to Gibraltar to compete in a major international tournament. During the games, she decided to play without wearing a hijab. That single choice changed everything for her life and career. When the tournament ended, the Chess Federation of Iran banned her from the national team. The authorities were angry that her hair was uncovered while she competed on the global stage. Her younger brother Borna was also banned at the same time. His only offense was playing a game against his own sister at the same event and treating her as a fellow player on equal terms. Two young siblings lost their place on the national team because of a strict set of rules that prioritized forced dress codes over human achievement. Facing a total ban in her home country, Dorsa made a brave decision at nineteen years old. She packed six suitcases, took her passport, and left for the United States after accepting a full chess scholarship at Saint Louis University. Moving to a new country alone was scary because she had no family nearby and no safety net if things went wrong. Instead of falling apart, Dorsa rebuilt her career under the United States Chess Federation. At the same time, she decided to study medicine with a goal of becoming a surgeon. She often says that playing chess and working in an operating room require the exact same focus and planning. "The chessboard and the operating room are not so different," Dorsa explained. "Both demand seeing the full position before making a move." She still carries deep love for the Iranian people and misses her homeland, but she knows she cannot return as long as current rules exist. "If I go back, they’re going to jail me somewhere, and nobody’s going to hear from me again," she said when asked about returning home. She speaks about this danger in a calm voice, accepting it as an undeniable fact of her current life. Today, Dorsa Derakhshani continues her medical training while remaining an inspiration to thousands of people around the world. Her story shows that true talent, intelligence, and personal courage cannot be erased by unfair bans or harsh rules. Iran lost one of its greatest chess champions, but she kept moving forward and built a bright future on her own terms. When a society values controlling a woman's hair more than honoring her mind, it does not hide her greatness; it only proves its own weakness to the entire world. #drthehistories

Two women on death row in Iran have recorded audio messages from their prison cells and asked the free world to save their lives. Now I bring their voices to you. Najmeh Amini is 23. An accounting student. Her crime? A post on social media. The regime calls it insulting the prophet. For one post, they will hang her. Mahboubeh Shabani is 33. During the protests, she carried wounded demonstrators to the hospital. Her crime? Saving lives. The regime calls it waging war against God. For saving lives, they will hang her. Let me be honest. Hashtags and tweets alone will not stop these executions. This regime only understands pressure. So I call on American, European, and world leaders: make these executions your red line. Tie every sanction, every deal, every negotiation to the lives of political prisoners. Demand their release now. Impose real costs for every hanging. Najmeh Amini and Mahboubeh Shabani must not die for the crime of freedom. Act now. Before it is too late.

The Navi #Pillay story won’t stop growing. Now it’s Cuba. In 2008, Cuba chaired the Non-Aligned Movement, a bloc of about 120 mostly developing countries, and Havana put her forward for the job of UN human rights chief. Then UN Watch looked at her first two years in that job and couldn’t find a single statement from her about how the Castro regime treats its own people. It gets worse. In March 2010, the Cuban political prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayo died after 85 days on a hunger strike, and governments everywhere were condemning Havana. That same month Pillay was photographed in Geneva, smiling next to Cuba’s foreign minister Bruno Rodríguez. Defending prisoners like Zapata was her job, and she spent that moment posing with the people who had locked him up. In 2019, she went to Havana as head of an international commission against the death penalty, thanked the regime for its hospitality, and talked about how open it was to ending executions. In 2022, Cuba passed a new penal code that went in the opposite direction, raising the number of capital crimes from 20 to 24. China, Cuba, Iran: each time she had to pick a side, she picked the regime over its victims. Israel, she never spared. And this is the woman Oslo has decided deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. en.cibercuba.com/noticias/20…

As a Muslim Arab, I am disgusted and heartbroken by what I saw across Western cities on October 7, 2026: people celebrating the October 7, 2023 massacre. Glorifying the murder, rape, and kidnapping of civilians is morally bankrupt, inhumane, and a disgrace to humanity. This wasn’t an ISIS or Al-Qaeda camp. This was in Western cities: people openly celebrating a massacre carried out by the filthy Muslim Brotherhood terrorists of Hamas against Jewish children, women, and civilians from all around the world in Israel. Utterly shameful. How did we reach a point where this needs to be explained? An eight-month-old baby was kidnapped. Women were raped. Children were murdered. Families were slaughtered. Human beings were dragged from their homes. No cause justifies this. No country justifies this. No grievance justifies this. Nothing justifies raping a woman. Nothing justifies kidnapping a baby. Nothing justifies murdering innocent people. And to see people in Western cities celebrating, glorifying, excusing, romanticising, or sanitising this horror in the name of “democracy” and “freedom of speech” is beyond disgusting. It is morally bankrupt. Shameful. Depraved. Inhumane. Heartless. Indefensible. What breaks my heart most is that we are even having this conversation. When did rape require a political explanation? When did kidnapping babies become something to celebrate? When did massacring Jews become something people could cheer for in the streets and still pretend they were standing for humanity? There is nothing progressive about celebrating barbarity. There is nothing courageous about glorifying terrorism. There is nothing democratic about cheering a massacre. This is not humanity. This is a moral disgrace. And the fact that anyone can celebrate such suffering should make every decent human being, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, or otherwise, feel both heartbroken and furious.

On 1 October, as President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs ACT Branch, I had the pleasure to host Gary Quinlan AO, President of the AIIA Board, as our speaker to discuss Australia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2029-30. As a former ambassador to the UN, including during Australia’s time on the UNSC 2013-14, he is undoubtedly the best person to discuss what it means to be at the ‘high table’ of international diplomacy. He gave us a great tour d’horizon, followed by an informative Q&A session. Thank you, Gary!

Mahboubeh Shabani’s death sentence is confirmed and she’s moved to solitary confinement. In her last call from prison, Maboubeh talks about the dire situation of other prisoners who are also in imminent danger of execution. Mahboubeh was arrested after the January massacre of Iranians by the Islamic Regime and charged with “moharebeh” or enmity against God. In reality, all she did was strapping the wounded onto the back of her motorcycle and taking them to the hospital while the Regime goons were shooting at people. Be her voice. Say her name before it’s too late. 🖤

The new documentary “This is our story” from @manototv compiled over 10,000 clips of raw footage captured by Iranian protesters and reveals the savagery of the regime against the people. It is a living testament of those who gave their lives for a free Iran, for the hope of a better tomorrow, even when they themselves were the future. We have failed the Iranian people as an international community and silenced their voice…and every person of conscience has a responsibility to know the truth and to fight against the Islamic republic until it is in the dustbin of history, where it belongs. My heroes: the Iranian people. This week on #TheQuad on @JNS_org:

What a shameful bow, Mr. Fletcher! In January, the Iranian regime massacred thousands of my people. Today you, the UN's humanitarian chief, bow to their killers. This is not diplomacy. It is surrender to murderers. Are you the world's humanitarian representative, or the host of January's killers? @TomFletcher @UN_OCHA
