Soil temperatures have risen steadily across SC in the past couple of weeks. If you are in an area prone to mini-ring, know that the fungus causing the disease can be active now even if you aren't seeing symptoms. Good time to be on a preventive program.

Haven’t posted a #Nematuesday in sometime. Check out our newly updated mist chamber courtesy of the Buildings and Grounds group here at PDREC. We’ve already put this to some good use in testing research plots. Many samples ahead!

We crested 80 deg soil temps this week here in our region of SC. For all the Carolina’s managers, be sure to have the right prevention in place for mini-ring as we approach the summer holiday. Waitea is active at these temperatures even though symptoms may not show for months

Keeping with the theme of anterior morphology, check out this Dolichodorus sp. (Awl nematode) found in association with St. Augustinegrass. Awl and sting nematodes have long stylets, but this photo shows the anterior protuberance of the lips at the stylet opening. #Nematuesday

For this #Nematuesday, let's look at Belonolaimus longicaudatus anterior morphology. Sting nematodes have very long body length (i.e., 2-3 mm), long stylets and constriction at the anterior end. These characteristics are helpful for ID.

Interesting nematode samples coming into the lab last week. Check out this Hemicycliophora spp., also known as sheath nematode. Impressive stylet and extra cuticular layer surrounding the body. Looking forward to additional #Nematuesday examples across the summer.

Improved weather conditions for warm season grasses has translated to more nematode samples here in SC. Got to see one we do not typically see here in the lab, but can be problematic on turf. Tylenchorhynchus species also known as stunt nematode. #Nematuesday

Fantastic day to host our annual turfgrass research field day. Special thanks to @DrBertMcCarty1 and JC Chong for providing presentations on troublesome weeds and insects in turf. Great discussion throughout the event!

Two plots treated with the same fungicide program over the past year and fungicides were great to combat diseases. Plot on the right also received nematicides needed for root knot nematodes. Come learn more on our full programs at news.clemson.edu/clemson-tur… #Nematuesday

Quantifying some spring samples today for root knot nematode. Here is a nice size comparison for an adult male vs juvenile. Pretty big difference. Juveniles quantified best by using mist extraction for bermudagrass. #Nematuesday.

Spring-like temperatures are definitely impacting turf color in our region. Differential green-up can be from a variety of causes, but one could be nematode damage. If you have abnormal areas continuing to lack vigor, consider sampling for nematodes #Nematuesday

Late #Nematuesday post from one of our trial site samples showing size comparison of Belonolaimus longicaudatus (right) and Hoplolaimus galeatus (left). Impressive nematodes damaging to many plant commodities.

Exciting to see Emily Braithwaite from @osubeaverturf win 1st place in the 3-min thesis competition at #SON2022. So many great presentations at this meeting and Emily provided a great overview of her research to document nematodes impacting turfgrasses in the PNW. @SON_nemaweb

Observed this Tylenchorhynchus nematode on a creeping bentgrass sample last week. Also called stunt nematode, which we see more problematic on bentgrass compared to bermudagrass here in SC. #Nematuesday
