“The bigger risk I face isn’t that you’re going to fail and we’re going to get rid of you. It’s that you get tired and you fall out of love.” - @peterfenton
Introducing Real Time, a new podcast from ClickHouse. In our first episode, Aaron Katz (@ceo_clickhouse) sits down with Benchmark's Peter Fenton on backing founders, building open-source businesses, and the AI supercycle.
A few highlights:
- You can't fake open-source adoption. But how do you turn it into a business? Peter on why ClickHouse's cloud aligned value creation with value capture.
- On the scale of the AI opportunity: “In 10 years, we’ll look back and dream about being here.” His advice to founders: stay curious, take risks, and make failure cheap.
- Benchmark's new playbook: four to six big, decade-long bets on generational founders.
- Peter flew Aaron to Big Sur himself and landed the helicopter on the roof of a house. Aaron took an Uber home.

We believe the future of observability is agent-led.
@vercel shows what that can look like: @vvoyer uses an agent to investigate errors in ClickHouse data.

Agents need the data, context and history to investigate problems. Users should be free to bring their own models, skills and harnesses.

AI hype cycle or supercycle?
@peterfenton sees AI’s potential to improve knowledge work as a reason to think bigger. His view: we’re still early.

🛑 Promoting a Postgres standby doesn't stop the old primary from taking writes.
So how do you fence it first?
⚡️ Bare metal: drop the veth
☁️ AWS: detach a NIC
🌐 GCP: delete a Dynamic NIC
How ClickHouse Managed Postgres does it

Your next ClickHouse query could use a little less nesting and a lot less memory. 🪄
26.10 adds function composition, arbitrary JOIN conditions, disk spilling for IN subqueries, and faster GROUP BY queries.

Had a fantastic time speaking at the @CMUDB seminar earlier this week on all the Postgres work we are doing @ClickHouseDB.
We dove deep into WalShadow’s internals. What I found especially interesting was how it handles parallel decoding and uses fencing to manage schema changes. This is one of the primary reasons you can expect very low latency even at high throughput when syncing data from Postgres to ClickHouse. Don’t miss that part.
Hoping some of these ideas could make their way into Postgres core. May be Logical decoding v5. 👀

Slow Postgres? Before adding local copies, think again.

Fast local reads come with synchronization, reconciliation, and more moving parts. What if Postgres on local NVMe could give you the speed without the complexity?
