Fantastic to see APPG Vice-Chairs and members hold the Government to account in Parliament on the approval of the Jackdaw gas field yesterday. Member @EllieChowns was clear with @andyburnham that Jackdaw won’t bring down bills but will add to heatwaves hitting the UK.

Member @NadiaWhittomeMP rounded out the contributions by reminding @mgshanks that the North Sea is a declining basin and cannot fund the energy transition we need. Instead we need significant government investment in clean energy.

The UK government has approved the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, owned and operated by Adura. The decision comes the same day as the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) calls for urgent action to keep climate targets within reach.

Attention is now on Rosebank, a much larger proposed North Sea oil field - with oil is mainly for export, and which could release over 250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. No new oil and gas fields are compatible with the UK’s commitment to the Paris Agreement.
