With global temperature rise set to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, urgent and stringent cuts to greenhouse emissions are needed to minimize the magnitude and duration of overshoot and return to 1.5°C by the end of the century, a new UNEP report finds. The Emissions Gap Report 2026: The Point of Return looks at a ā€˜lowest possible’ 1.5°C overshoot scenario, in which peak warming by around the middle of the century is limited to 1.7-1.8°C and global temperature rise is returned to or below 1.5°C by 2100, with about a 50 per cent chance. url-shortener.me/Q366 via EnviroNews

Environmental advocacy organisations, 350.org and Climate Action Network (CAN), have called on world leaders to urgently strengthen climate commitments and accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels following the release of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) 2026 Emissions Gap Report. The report, titled ā€œThe Point of Returnā€, released on Wednesday, October 21, warns that current climate policies and national emissions reduction pledges remain insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, with the world projected to experience approximately 2.6°C of warming by the end of the century under current trajectories. url-shortener.me/Q365 via EnviroNews

Climate campaign group, 350.org, has called on European governments to impose permanent taxes on fossil fuel companies’ excess profits and channel the revenue into public services, climate action, housing and education amid growing protests over the rising cost of living across major European cities. The organisation made the call on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, as demonstrations over living costs, housing and education swept cities including Paris, Milan and Brussels, with protesters also expressing concerns about rising fuel prices. shorturl.at/MMPnP via EnviroNews

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kuwait Fund for Development to strengthen cooperation in supporting developing countries as they tackle climate change, and to coordinate efforts in areas of shared development interest. The agreement, signed on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in Bangkok, Thailand lays the groundwork for joint support, exploration of co-financing opportunities and technical assistance. shorturl.at/TR186 via EnviroNews

Fisheries and wildlife trade authorities from 22 African coastal countries have agreed to strengthen cooperation in regulating international trade in marine species, as growing commercial exploitation raises concerns over biodiversity conservation, food security and the sustainability of Africa’s fisheries sector. The commitment followed a regional workshop jointly organised by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Secretariat and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). shorturl.at/W5OvN via EnviroNews
