A key objection to merit-based pay for teachers is that it ignores other factors in a student’s life that affect their academic performance. It’s a thoughtful point, but the right answer is to define merit in terms of the *improvement* that teachers deliver to their students over the school year. That also makes sure that teachers in wealthy school districts aren’t simply rewarded over those in poorer ones for a higher starting baseline.
