20 years as a varsity head coach taught me this:
Talent wins games.
Culture wins seasons.
Same at work. You can hire skill. You have to build the culture that keeps it.

Football isnât supposed to be comfortable because life isnât always comfortable.
We donât teach our players to play to the scoreboard. We teach them to play to a standard.
That standard doesnât change because weâre winning. It doesnât change because weâre losing. It doesnât change because the score is close or out of hand.
I donât believe in teaching kids to feel sorry for themselves or to expect an opponent to stop competing because the score got uncomfortable.
You earn respect by competing, not by asking someone else to stop. If the two coaches have mutual respect, understand each otherâs philosophy and both teams are competing for four quarters, then letâs play ball and when itâs all done weâll shake it up at the 50 and move on.

Everybody on a staff is fired up in August.
Week 6 is when you find out who still breaks down film nobody asked them to watch.
What's the one habit you look for in your coaching staff once the season gets long?

Young coaches:
You donât have to know everything.
Ask questions.
Take notes.
Watch film.
Steal good ideas.
Admit when youâre wrong.
Keep learning.
Your ego will slow your growth faster than your lack of knowledge ever will.
Stay teachable. âď¸

As an Athletic Director, I believe we live in an era where too many high school athletes are chasing the scholarship instead of embracing the grind, development, and process that will make them better.
We also live in an era of the transfer portal, where opportunities for high school athletes are becoming more limited.
My advice to every athlete who wants to play at the next level is simple:
Focus on what you can control.
Control your effort.
Control your attitude.
Control your development.
Control how you respond to adversity.
Control how you show up for your team every day.
Donât let the pursuit of a scholarship take away from the experience of becoming the best version of yourself.
If you commit to the process, embrace the grind, and become the best player and person you can be, you will have no regrets.
The scholarship should be a byproduct of your development, not the sole purpose of your journey.
Trust the process. Earn your opportunities. Become the best version of yourself.

Too many coaches think theyâre above certain jobs. If picking up trash, setting up drills, doing laundry, or breaking down film helps the team win, then do it. No one is bigger than the program. Ego doesnât win championships. Teams do.
