A Parent of one of players remaining on the Desert Ridge Varsity Football program has released a statement around the program Thursday Morning:
Competitors but still great friends! If you can’t enjoy competition against your friends then competition isn’t for you! If you didn't know Coach Johnson has been battling cancer and on Oct. 8th his wife posted this, "Jake will be admitted Monday to Medical City Dallas for another round of induction chemo. The chemo pills were just not strong enough to stop the growth of cancer cells so they are going to hit it hard with something stronger! We thank you again for praying and we ask that you please continue to hold the line with us and lift Jake’s name up to the Creator of the Universe."
Praying for you and your family my friend. Thanks for bringing out the best in me and our program! We learned a lot from last Friday Night! You’ve done an amazing job with Braun! Keep fighting the good fight!!
Thanks for the picture @CoachJohnson61 Love you brother! @THSCAcoaches

Two reasons you don't get what you want in life:
1) You didn't want it as bad as you said you did
2) You tried to bargain on the price

There are 3 fights a team has to fight daily:
1. Division from within (chemistry);
2. The competition (opponent);
3. Outside influences.

I encourage them to leave/quit if they don't want to be there. I can't/won't coach hostages. After that I'm very frank that I will not waste their time or effort. Once they realize that they're CHOOSING to opt in and that I work for them, life gets better for all parties.

Are we helping kids… or teaching them to run from hard things?
I see this all the time in schools.
A student has a problem with a teacher, coach, classmate, or situation, and too often the first response is to remove the problem.
Switch the class.
Quit the team.
Avoid the conversation.
Have the parent step in and fix it.
I understand the instinct. We don’t want to see our kids struggle.
But Dr. Becky Kennedy said something powerful:
“The more you optimize for happiness in childhood, the more you actually wire for anxiety in adulthood.”
Kids need to learn that disappointment is survivable.
Conflict is survivable.
Failure is survivable.
Being uncomfortable is survivable.
Sometimes the best thing we can do for kids isn’t remove the hard thing.
It’s help them learn how to walk through it.
