Another athlete that took advantage of the opportunities at NEO to reach his goals in life!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Happy birthday to former John Marshall, NEO A&M, Oklahoma State and NFL defensive end Antonio Smith, born on this day in 1981.
Smith was First Team All-City by The Oklahoman as a senior in 1999 after recording 71 tackles and 12 sacks for the Bears, who went 8-4 and advanced to the 5A quarterfinals.
He attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for two seasons before transferring to Oklahoma State, where he was honorable mention All-Big 12 as a junior.
He was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2004 NFL Draft and helped the Cardinals reach the Super Bowl in 2009. He would go on to also play with the Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos, winning a Super Bowl ring with the Broncos in 2016.
He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2011 as a member of the Texans. In his career, Smith made 315 tackles, 47.5 sacks, forced and recovered 11 fumbles and scored one defensive touchdown.
After retiring from football, Smith returned to Oklahoma to become a rancher. He also volunteered his time coaching the defensive line for his son's high school football team at Christian Heritage.
