I heard a high school coach say, "I'm just coaching for a paycheck." If you're coaching high school sports just for a paycheck, you're coaching for the wrong reasons.

Entering my 13th year as a varsity baseball head coach. I’ve always carried bigger rosters to give more kids opportunities. Over the years, I’m realizing smaller rosters are better. More reps, playing time, development, team chemistry and individual coaching.

I grew up on Long Island, where I’d say 90% of HS baseball fields are Now Turf. In CT, one of the most expensive states, I’d say 97% are still grass. Turf means fewer rainouts, more practices, better playing conditions and more games. Is CT H.S. Baseball getting left behind?

George would have Fired his own son by now! Hal is a mess.
NEW: There is over a 50% chance that Jarren Duran is moved this offseason, via Kalshi. $100 on Duran to be on the Red Sox by Opening Day pays out $205.45. What team would be the best fit for the Red Sox OF?

True story. D1 coach calls for a reference on a pitcher’s command. I tell him he’s wild, walks 1–2 per inning. Summer coach claims he throws strikes. I check the stats. Not true. Coach signs him anyway. Was Gone after 1 semester. But he did throw 90 MPH.

Is anyone else noticing more youth baseball players on their cell phones in the dugout DURING games? I get it, everyone is obsessed with their phones these days, but seriously, can we put them away for a couple of hours and focus on the game?

Thoughts? Ok or not Ok?
Hit a hole-in-one. Free mattresses if the team wins. You went to an insurance company that specialized in calculating the odds. That was probably until 2006. Then it moved to Las Vegas, where ticket brokers holding inventory for one team would bet against that team to hedge. Then, by 2018, it moved to online sportsbooks. Now it's happening on prediction markets. An LA-based restaurant group put $60,000 on Kalshi before the NLCS that the Dodgers would lose to the Brewers. Why? They calculated that a Dodgers World Series run would bring in an extra $120,000. No run, $0. So they hedged. Guaranteed $60,000 either way. The Dodgers lost. The $60,000 grossed $120,000. Why an exchange and not a sportsbook? At a sportsbook, your price is locked. The only way out is a cash-out, and that number is set by the book's algorithm. On an exchange, there's thousands of competing buyers on the other side. The price moves. It's a reflection of the market, and you can take it or leave it at any point. The speculators who believed the Dodgers would win provided the liquidity the sportsbook never did. Marketplaces like Kalshi are giving businesses the exchange that prize indemnity and sportsbooks never could. Because the other side is real.

I’m all for HS athletes playing fall sports. In CT, HS baseball starts in April, and travel ball ends by early August. That’s only 4 months of games vs. 10 in warmer states. Wouldn’t those extra fall game reps benefit cold-weather players? Thoughts?

Helping kids find a place to play college baseball isn’t as hard as some make it out to be. Yes, recruiting is tougher now. But too many coaches oversell players, overpromise, and target schools where kids can’t compete. Be honest about their ability. It’s that simple.

There’s ZERO reason for travel ball at 8, 9, or 10. Play Little League, develop, and have fun. If I could do it again, I wouldn’t recommend travel ball that young. I’ve seen too many kids burned out by high school. Agree or disagree, that’s my take.

Brewers winning the WS!
NEW: The Brewers now have a 65.7% chance on Kalshi to win the World Series. Can the Guardians or Rays give them a run for their money?

With all this rain, I’m looking for one more tournament Oct. 31 weekend. Asked several directors how many games on the final day. Every answer? THREE. Why? Why? Why? How about a TWO-game max? Not signing up for three. Non Baseball people running these events.

No 3-Peat for Dodgers!
NEW: Kalshi traders forecast under a 45% chance that more than 2,425 MLB games will be played in 2027. In a standard MLB season, there are 2,430 games. $100 pays out $239.90 on Kalshi if each team plays a full 162-game season.

It seems like 90% of pitching instructors advertise teaching kids how to throw harder, while only 10% focus on teaching them how to throw strikes. Actually, I can’t remember the last time I saw an AD from a pitching instructor saying, “I’ll teach your kid how to throw strikes.”

Everyone loves college baseball commitment posts. Players and families are excited. Then a year later, you see a decommitment or transfer portal post. Will we ever get back to developing players and players staying 4–5 years because they love where they are?

I like Brewers to win it all.
NEW: A Kalshi user purchased the Guardians to win the World Series at an average price of 1.43% for a combined cost of $1,712. Their original position is now worth $22,935. A Cleveland championship wins them $120,080... should this user SELL or HOLD?
