Freddie Freeman says his 69 year old dad still throws him batting practice everyday because he believes not everything has to be about getting better, and says the hour they spend together is worth more than any amount of reps with a real pitcher or coach “When people ask me, ‘What advice do you have for my 10-year-old?’ I say, ‘It’s not for the 10-year-old. It’s for you, the parent.’ My dad loved practicing and throwing batting practice and doing those kinds of things with me every single day. When you have a parent that loves it just as much as I loved it, it’s kind of a match made in heaven.” “My dad was the one that led me to baseball, and then obviously I just loved it. He was fueling that fire. He still throws me batting practice to this day. In the offseason, I’ll take about two months off baseball activities. Then in January I’ll go to my high school in Orange County, and we’ll spend an hour together. I work out with him and he throws me batting practice.” “He’s 69 years old and he still throws. The last two years he goes, ‘Freddie, I’m not very good anymore.’ And I said, ‘Dad, that’s not the thing. It’s not about that. It’s about the hour we spend together.’” “I’ll figure it out in spring training. I hit every day there. I just want to hit with you. This is our thing. He thinks he’s not very good, but I think he’s great.”

Many of you asked for the context of the quote I shared yesterday. It's one of my favorite parts of the book. Here it is: "Caring is cool. Nonchalance is a cop-out. Pour your heart and soul into what you love. You don’t get unlimited chances. Try hard. Give your all. Give a damn. When you hold yourself back because you fear failure or looking ‘uncool,’ you sacrifice growth and potential (and mastery and fulfillment and richness and love and all the other good stuff in life) for short-term safety and comfort. It’s a trap. Get over it. Fear and insecurity are part of human nature. You can either go through the motions and be superficially cool (but actually boring). Or you can step into the arena, lay it on the line, care deeply, make yourself vulnerable, and fully live your one and only life. The world doesn’t need more mediocrity or going through the motions. The world needs more people putting themselves out there and giving it their all. The world needs more people who have the guts to care. The best athletes care deeply. The best artists care deeply. The best leaders care deeply. The best coaches care deeply. The best teachers care deeply. The best doctors care deeply. The best writers care deeply. The best scientists care deeply. The best parents care deeply. Caring deeply is the cost of admission to a big and textured life. Try hard and give a damn." —The Way of Excellence If you find this sort of thing resonant, you'll love the book: bit.ly/4uCzeQ7

Mental toughness is not about always feeling good. It’s about staying anchored when you don’t. You can feel nerves and still perform at your best. You can feel down and still support a loved one. You can feel insecure and still step into the arena. Your brain is plastic. Your mind is adaptive. You are not fixed. Every time you sit with discomfort, approach challenges, and return after setbacks, you’re building capacity, you’re building mental toughness.

It's COLD out here in Missouri, folks! #Mizzou softball and other teams play in warm-weather tournaments on the weekend and then come home and can't practice on dirt in February. "My No. 1 focus is to shout from the rooftops that they need to move the softball season back."

Look who’s coming with me next week 👀
Next week, Grant Mollring @FBCoachMO15 from our team will be in Dallas during the @NFCAorg 2024 Convention. If you're a softball coach that would love to talk recruiting and pick his brain while you're down there, make sure you message him so he can connect with you! #NFCA2024
