Codex CLI 0.164.0 is out!
Highlights:
- /presets adds 10 numbered slots for reusable prompts and slash commands, with a keyboard shortcut menu for quick access
- Enterprise MCP connections now authenticate using Codex account grants or dedicated sign-in, including OAuth clients requiring secrets
- /model and /permissions now accept inline arguments for model, reasoning effort, speed, and permission profiles
- Credential masking now covers remote Bash commands and Zsh snapshot sessions, including credentials from custom providers
Complete details in thread ↓
Fixed:
- Failed compaction no longer leaves partial summaries in conversation history; background compaction failures fall back without panicking
- Resuming sessions now finds compressed histories and restores saved thread settings instead of replacing them with global defaults

Codex CLI 0.163.0 is out!
Highlights:
- Send follow-ups while Codex is responding to steer it immediately; interrupting a turn also stops active Code Mode cells and nested tool calls.
- /config now searches preferences across categories, applies supported settings live, and indicates which changes require a restart.
- Independent read-only tools — skill, memory, and conversation-history lookups — can now run in parallel.
- Daybreak is enabled by default for eligible accounts; codex exec can also select it with an OpenAI API key.
Complete details in thread ↓
Shell executor:
- Codex now uses its standard shell executor; the patched zsh backend is removed. Configurations using retired shell flags receive a migration notice.
- Linux and macOS release package size reduced by stripping symbols from packaged binaries while preserving them in build outputs.

Codex update: GPT-5.5 retirement in Codex
What changed:
• GPT-5.5 retires from Codex for ChatGPT-authenticated users on October 14, 2026 at noon PDT (19:00 UTC).
• OpenAI API and API-key-authenticated Codex sessions are unaffected.
• Migrate to gpt-6.1-sol where available and update any configurations, agents, or scripts that reference gpt-5.5.
Details in thread.
What to update:
- Audit and update workspace defaults, saved model settings, managed configurations, custom agents, scheduled tasks, and any scripts that still select gpt-5.5.
- See the GPT-5.5 retirement page for plan-specific replacements, and the workspace model availability page for administrator guidance.
Codex CLI 0.162.1 is out!
Highlights:
- Fixes a TUI crash when asynchronous questions contain multiple lines
- Fixes startup failures caused by background server feature settings differing from CLI defaults
Complete details in thread ↓
Bug fixes:
- Fixed a TUI crash when async questions contain multiple lines; line breaks and hyperlink destinations are now preserved.
- Fixed startup failures when a running background server's feature settings differ from CLI defaults; compatibility checks now apply only to explicit command-line feature overrides.
