๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ In a recent New York Times opinion piece, Saudi Ambassador Reema Bandar Al-Saud @rbalsaud made a striking comparison between the fight against ISIS and the challenge posed by the terrorist Houthis: โ€œISIS was defeated by local forces backed by a coalition of more than 80 nations. The Houthis can be defeated the same way. It is Yemenโ€™s fight to lead.โ€ Back in 2014โ€“2015, when ISIS was tearing through Iraq and Syria, the world didnโ€™t just throw together a military coalition. What happened was a rare alignment of self-interest. Countries that normally disagreed on almost everything recognized that the cost of doing nothing was higher than the cost of cooperating. The Houthis, a terrorist group, have demonstrated capabilities that pose regional and international security concerns, with Iranian support playing a significant role. Theyโ€™ve launched more than a thousand ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia. Theyโ€™ve threatened the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical chokepoint for global trade. Their activities have also raised concerns about weapons proliferation, regional militancy, and the recruitment and indoctrination of children. A disruption to Saudi energy production or export routes could raise fuel, transport, and manufacturing costs worldwide, feeding inflation and squeezing households and businesses far beyond the region. With ISIS, the death toll and refugee waves hit European and American communities hard enough to force the issue. Much of the human cost of the Houthi threat, by contrast, has fallen on Yemenis and Saudis, while many foreign capitals continue to treat it as a regional problem. Sheโ€™s not just saying we need another coalition of more than 80 nations. Sheโ€™s pointing to a lesson from the fight against ISIS: international cooperation becomes possible when enough countries recognize that the threat extends beyond any single region. By the time a major disruption to shipping drives up prices for consumers in Chicago or Hamburg, or advances in missile technology create a more immediate threat to distant countries, the cost of responding could be much higher. Saudi Arabia is working with Yemeni partners, helping counter weapons smuggling, restricting financial channels, and providing humanitarian assistance. Countries should designate the Houthis as a terrorist organization, cut off their funding, intercept weapons shipments at sea, and strengthen support for Yemenโ€™s legitimate government. Saudi Arabia has a legitimate interest in defending its people and territory and preventing Yemen from becoming a permanent platform for cross-border attacks and regional instability. At the same time, lasting security cannot be built on military pressure alone. It requires a viable Yemeni state, functioning institutions, humanitarian relief, and a political future in which Yemenis, not armed factions backed by outside powers, determine their countryโ€™s direction. Any effective response must be coordinated, grounded in international law, attentive to civilian protection, and paired with a credible path toward peace. Saudi Arabia should not have to wait for the rest of the world to feel the danger before that danger is acknowledged. Saudi Arabiaโ€™s security, regional security, Yemenโ€™s stability, global energy security, and the freedom of international navigation are inseparable parts of that challenge. PEACE IS NEVER SECURED BY IGNORING THE THREAT.
The terrorist Houthi militias have shown the world what they are capable of. Their threat extends far beyond Saudi Arabia and Yemen. In @nytopinion, I explain why the international community can no longer afford to underestimate them. nytimes.com/2026/10/27/opiniโ€ฆ

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท The Tehran visit by Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman @kbsalsaud ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ, alongside Pakistanโ€™s Asim Munir ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ and Tรผrkiyeโ€™s Ibrahim Kalฤฑn ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท, is an effort to avert renewed war between the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ, Israel and Iran and protect the region from its consequences. โ€” This visit supports Qatari and Pakistani mediation and gives Iran a last chance to prevent a wider war that could engulf Iran, the Gulf states and the wider region, including countries without borders with Iran. โ€” Saudi Arabia, Tรผrkiye and Pakistan will defend their people, territory and critical infrastructure. An Iranian attack on any member would trigger the Mecca Pactโ€™s collective defence commitments to safeguard their countries and regional security. โ€” I believe this visit had nothing to do with the Houthis, and they were not on the meetingโ€™s agenda. They are a terrorist militia with no value or strategic weight, even to Iran. โ€” Renewed war without a credible plan to contain escalation could send shocks through energy markets, shipping and global trade. Preventing that outcome requires serious diplomacy and a clear readiness to respond to aggression. ๐Ÿ”ด Mohammed Alhamed

The Houthi threat to the Red Sea is more than a decade old, built with Iranian weapons and guidance. Its victims are civilian mariners of many nations, and the economies it damages include those of East Africa, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and Europe. With Hormuz disrupted, the Red Sea is increasingly important to global energy markets; an attack there is an attack on every economy that depends on that route. This month, Houthi missiles struck Riyadhโ€™s airport, killing travelers and workers of at least eight nationalities, an American among them, and wounding hundreds more, pilgrims bound for Mecca among them. To leave this fight to Saudi Arabia alone would be a failure of collective security. There is no world order worth the name if its members will not stand together against those who attack it most violently and openly declare they will continue.
Today's #MustRead from the Saudi ambassador to the United States: "The Houthis have no red lines. There is no limit to what they will inflict on those they call enemies. They compel students as young as 10 to chant 'Death to America' and send thousands of children into combat. The radical indoctrination must be stopped." nytimes.com/2026/10/27/opiniโ€ฆ

Good morning ๐ŸŒ„ Todayโ€™s meeting in Tehran will be a serious test. Can Saudi Arabia and its partners restrain the Houthis through diplomacy, or will Iran simply use another round of talks to buy time? HRH Prince Khalid bin Salman is leading the Kingdomโ€™s delegation, alongside Pakistanโ€™s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Tรผrkiyeโ€™s intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalฤฑn, for talks with Iranian leaders, including President Pezeshkian and Supreme National Security Council Secretary Rezaei. The stated goal is de-escalation through dialogue, with Qatar and Pakistan supporting mediation efforts. I hope diplomacy delivers, but I remain deeply sceptical! Iran has spent years building up the Houthis with weapons, training, intelligence and IRGC support. Since the fall of Assad, the Houthis have become an even more valuable part of Tehranโ€™s regional proxy network. Why would Iran willingly give that up? A heavily armed Houthi movement on Saudi Arabiaโ€™s doorstep gives Tehran exactly what it wants: a permanent pressure point against the Kingdom, a means of threatening regional security and the ability to disrupt vital international shipping routes. And the timing speaks for itself. Saudi air defences have already intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh today. This is the reality these talks must address! We will probably hear all the familiar diplomatic language about cooperation, dialogue and regional stability. Fine. But nice words and friendly handshakes mean very little if the attacks continue. The real test is what happens on the ground. Do Houthi attacks stop? Does Iran use its influence to force them to stop? Are the weapons, training and intelligence that sustain this proxy force cut off? Saudi Arabia is right to pursue diplomacy, but it must judge Tehran by actions, not promises. Iran has invested far too much in the Houthis to abandon them without a compelling reason. A genuine change in Iranian policy would have to be demonstrated, not merely announced. If the missiles keep flying, the diplomacy has failed. That is what we should be watching today.
