Excited to organize this school. Collective behavior is everywhere from ants foraging to human behavior. It is not just about basic science but have life implications from understanding how consensus work, how misinformation is transmitted,.. apply here:

It's happening! This week we are investigating the swarm dynamics of 10'000 locusts in the #ImagingHangar

Today is our last day in The Maldives, and we had an incredible time studying baby blacktip reef sharks preying on huge schools of fish with @icouzin, @albi_angela , Luke. Thanks to Inge, @Luca10in2010 , @MaRHECenter and all other amazing people we met. 🦈🐟🌊 @MPI_animalbehav

The #ImagingHangar @UniKonstanz is abuzz with the sound of 60k #locust feet. More than 4k locusts have been tagged with reflective markers for tracking with the Motion Capture System. Researchers from @CBehav and @MPI_animalbehav aim to understand the behaviour of locust swarms.

Not to be outdone, here's 20 minutes worth of some frankly miraculous Trex tracking from last week, on teeny-tiny fish babies that were functionally invisible for any given frame. @po7ooo

This work has been crucial for us to understand the practicalities of using vision with drones. It helped with planning a data collection strategy for project #MELA. A realistic and practical approach of bringing computer vision in ecology driven research. @ben_koger et al.
I am very happy to have this method out in @AnimalEcology! Congrats to @Ben_Koger and all our co-authors! We developed this approach to facilitate studies of #collectivebehavior in wild populations, for systems & questions that are hard to address using existing methods.

More amazing content from this study! The video highlights different scales at which authors quantified individuals in a zebra herd, from large scale movements to fine scale individual animal posture, in a social context.@ben_kogerv @adwait_d @jgraving @BlairRCostelloe @icouzin
Consumer drones and machine learning enables research of group living animals, from zebras to gelada monkeys, in their natural social and environmental context at sub-meter and sub-second resolution. @ben_koger @adwait_d @jgraving @BlairRCostelloe @icouzin

Out now in @AnimalEcology! A general approach for using drones to study animal behavior in the wild. Record the location and posture of many animals simultaneously at sub-second sub-meter resolution, plus reconstruct their 3D landscape: doi.org/10.1111/1365-2656.13…

What an incredible happy surprise!! I feel deeply honored to receive this prestigious award, which will enable my group to break new ground and add exciting neuroscientific perspectives to the study of complex decision-making and collective behavior.
Armin Bahl @BahlLab, group leader at the #CASCB @UniKonstanz, receives an #ERCStartingGrant. His project “Neural basis of zebrafish collective decision-making” is funded with 1.5 Mio EUR as just announced by @ERC_Research. Congratulations! 🎉🥳
