Harvard's first chairman of sociology, Pitirim Sorokin, spent decades analyzing every major civilization in recorded history to answer one question:
Why do great cultures die?
His answer, published in 1941, predicted almost everything happening today.
Down to the collapse of the family, the death of art, and the rise of tyrants. Maybe even the popularity of TikTok.

Remembering today the great Maria Callas. 🎶❤️
‘An opera begins long before the curtain goes up and ends long after it has come down. It starts in my imagination, it becomes my life, and it stays part of my life long after I’ve left the opera house.’ - Maria Callas

Social behaviors can be passed down without understanding the original cause
The 1966 Five Monkey Experiment .
This experiment demonstrates social learning and operant conditioning. The monkeys learned to avoid climbing the ladder through observation and the fear of punishment.
Over time, even without experiencing the original cold water punishment, the behavior persisted and became a tradition, showing how social behaviors can be passed down without understanding the original cause.

This indigenous tribe had to fend off smartphone addiction too
Indigenous people of a Brazilian tribe have fallen into porn addiction after being connected to the Internet
The Marubo tribe of Brazil has lived isolated for hundreds of years in the jungle along the Itui River, a tributary of the Amazon river. Last fall, 20 satellite systems from Starlink were installed in their village of about 2,000 people. According to the American newspaper The New York Times, the Marubos were happy at first, as they were able to quickly call rescuers and doctors or communicate with relatives who had gone to the city.
After six months, however, the elders sounded the alarm. Young people were becoming lazy and spending half a day in hammocks with smartphones. Many became addicted to porn, even though their traditional culture forbids even kissing in public. Men became addicted to shooting games. As a result, elders banned Internet use for more than two hours in the morning and five hours in the evening.
“If you don't hunt, fish or grow plants in the village, you will have nothing to eat,” warned a local elder.
