A 24-year-old man who Sheriff’s Police escorted off a Chicago Transit Authority bus for possessing suspect cannabis in plain sight is facing a felony after officers found him in illegal possession of a firearm. At approximately 9:35 p.m. on Oct. 9, Sheriff’s Police saw Anthony Hicks, of Chicago, with cannabis on the bus in the 4900 block of Madison Street, which is in violation of CTA rules. While escorting him off the bus, Hicks attempted to flee, but officers apprehended him and placed him in handcuffs. While searching Hicks, they found a loaded firearm in his waistband and learned he was on parole for a previous firearm conviction. Officers also recovered suspect cannabis from his book bag. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Hicks with possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender and possession of a weapon by a person with a prior conviction for a forcible felony. He was also charged with manufacture/delivery of cannabis and a misdemeanor count of resisting/obstructing a peace officer. Hicks was ordered to Cook County Jail custody on Oct. 10 following his first appearance hearing at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse. The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. #CookCountySheriff #LawEnforcement #CCSPD

A 28-year-old Chicago man is facing a felony gun charge after Sheriff’s Police found him in illegal possession of a loaded firearm during a traffic stop in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood. At approximately 10:10 p.m. on Oct. 8, Sheriff’s Police Organized Crime Division Investigators saw a Black Ford Escape run a red light at the intersection of 85th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. The Ford eventually stopped at a parking lot in the 700 block of East 87th Street. When investigators spoke with the driver, they saw green plant material in and around the center console and smelled a strong odor of cannabis as well as the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. Investigators asked the driver and her four passengers out of the car to conduct a drug investigation. While patting down one of the passengers, Kendall Jennings, investigators found a firearm in his waistband and learned that he was denied a FOID. Jennings was taken into custody. The driver was cited for running the red light and another passenger was cited for the two empty bottles of Miller High Life investigators found in the backseat. On the morning of Oct. 9, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Jennings with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. He appeared at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse later that day for his first appearance hearing, where he was ordered released from custody. The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. #CookCountySheriff #LawEnforcement #CCSPD

The Cook County Jail chess team won third place in the men’s competition—its best-ever finish—in the 6th Annual Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for detained individuals. The tournament, held on October 13 and 14, drew a record 140 teams from 56 countries, including 90 men’s teams and 50 women’s and youth sections. The Jail in collaboration with FIDE, the sport’s international governing body, has hosted the championship for each of its six years. The tournament was inspired by Cook County Jail’s chess program, which Sheriff Tom Dart founded on the belief the game could be used as a tool for rehabilitation. Congratulations to our players, to Dr. Mikhail Korenman who oversees the chess program and tournament, and to the coaches and staff who helped them prepare to compete on an international stage. #CCDOC #FIDEChess #ChessTournament #CookCountySheriff

Our Victim Support Services unit was incredibly honored to receive a donation of essential hygiene products from Love Purse! 💜 #LovePurse is a wonderful nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring dignity and hope for women in crisis by providing new purses packed with full-sized toiletries and uplifting, handwritten notes of inspiration. These personal care items are absolutely vital to our mission. Often, survivors come into our care with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Being able to provide them with basic necessities right away is a crucial first step in making them feel safe, valued, and supported. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to Love Purse and all the community organizations standing alongside us to aid and empower survivors. 🤝✨ #CookCountySheriff #DVAM #DomesticViolenceAwareness #VictimSupport #CommunityPartners #SupportSurvivors

A 50-year-old man is facing felony gun charges after he was found with a loaded firearm at a CTA bus stop. At approximately 2:29 p.m. on September 28, Sheriff's Police Mass Transit Unit Bike Team officers were patrolling the North Avenue CTA bus route when they noticed a man actively smoking at a bus stop—a violation of CTA ordinance. During the stop, officers spotted the distinct shape of a firearm in the man's right pocket. A subsequent search of Peter Jackson revealed a Taurus semi-automatic handgun along with a 12 round magazine containing 8 live rounds of ammunition. Jackson was found to have an expired FOID card from 2012 and no concealed carry license. A few hours later, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office charged Jackson with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. The public is reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. #CookCountySheriff #LawEnforcement #CCSPD
