This seems like a great time to reshare my favourite Sir Patrick Stewart performance, ‘What has the ECHR ever done for us?’ It’s just perfect in every possible way … including the ending 😂😂😂 RIP. 🎥 The Guardian

Every 90 minutes, someone in the UK or Ireland dies by suicide. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is not inevitable. You can interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts. You could save a life. I've shared this video before; it's message remains as important and powerful as ever. You won't always know someone needs help so why not message that friend now and just check in?

This is one of the most romantic paintings in American history, but the artist hid a second story in it, one that only reveals itself once you know who the tired old man in the corner really was... The painting is Marriage License, made by Norman Rockwell for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1955. It is late on a Saturday afternoon in a small-town clerk's office. A young couple leans over the desk to fill out the paperwork for their marriage license, the man's arm around her, the woman up on tiptoe in a yellow dress to sign her name. The whole room is dim and brown, and a shaft of golden light falls through the window and lands on just the two of them, as if the day itself knows what is happening here. Rockwell built it out of contrast: the couple glow with the beginning of everything, and, slumped in the corner, the old clerk waits, ready to go home, because for him, couples in love are just the ordinary traffic of an ordinary day. But here is what almost no one knows: the clerk was a real man, a local shopkeeper named Jason Braman, and Rockwell chose him for a reason. Braman had recently lost his wife. Rockwell knew it, and he asked him to pose, in his own words, "as a way to give him something else to think about." So the tired old man watching two young people promise themselves to each other is not acting. He is a widower placed by Rockwell right beside the very thing he has just lost. Once you know that, the whole painting deepens because it is no longer only about young love. It is about the full arc of it, the beginning and the end in one room, the couple who have everything ahead and the man who had it and lost it, sitting a few feet apart in the same afternoon light. And here's the best part: the young couple were real too, engaged in life, Joan and Francis Mahoney, and Rockwell gave them the oil sketch as a wedding present. They married. And they stayed married for the rest of their lives...

Today, thousands of us came together to provide an alternative voice to inequality, racism and war. Stop spending billions on weapons that kill people - and start investing in a society that feeds, houses and cares for people instead!

A week ago, communities across the UK were coming #TogetherForGood. Now the events are over, the photos are in - and honestly, we couldn't be prouder of what we created together. 💚 We've put together a short highlights video - watch it and share it far and wide. 🙌 Every share helps more people discover what's possible when communities come together for good! #GreatBigGreenWeek #GBGW2026

In case you forgot, we live on a planet where lightning turns sand into glass, dolphins give each other names, the ocean glows in the dark, and rain has a scent before it falls. You stand here with a beating heart, a steady moon above, and a world quietly, absurdly beautiful.

Scotland became the first nation in the UK to pass a law requiring “swift bricks” in new buildings where reasonably practical and appropriate. These small built-in nesting spaces provide safe homes for birds such as swifts, sparrows, and starlings, whose populations have declined as older buildings with natural nesting gaps are replaced by sealed modern construction.

The next generation isn’t waiting, they’re leading. This Earth Day, we recognize that young people hold the power to shape a future where our ocean is protected, respected, and restored. Whether it’s advocating for change, rethinking our habits, or inspiring others to care, every step forward creates a ripple effect. The ocean has always taken care of us, now it’s our turn to protect it. #EarthDay #OceanFuture #YouthLead [Image by @noaa]
