Passenger: “Sorry, could you leave the shade up? I chose this seat because I wanted to look out the window.” Seatmate: “The sun is hitting me right in the face. Can you shut it?” Passenger: “I can pull it down halfway. That would cut most of the glare without making the window completely dark.” Seatmate: “No, please close it all the way.” I lowered the shade, leaving just a narrow opening. Passenger: “Is that better?” Seatmate: “Not really. Light is still getting through.” Passenger: “Okay, I’ll close it for now. Maybe we can raise it again once the sun shifts.” About twenty minutes later, the sunlight had moved, so I lifted the shade a little. Seatmate: “Seriously? I thought we agreed to keep it closed.” Passenger: “We agreed to close it while the sun was shining in your face. It isn’t hitting you anymore.” Seatmate: “I can still see the light.” Passenger: “I’m not asking you to sit in direct sunlight. I just want to look outside now and then. It’s a five-hour trip.” Seatmate: “Then you should have booked a different seat.”..
