“Startup” isn’t a word reserved only for those wanting to raise money or become a Unicorn.
A “startup” is when you undertake a venture full of uncertainty and challenges, one that might not succeed, yet you dive in, driven by passion and giving it your all.
Leadership is giving people a desire for a vision.
If you desire to be liked or be "the nice guy", by your example you will give people a desire to a) like you and/or b) want others to like them. This leads to organizational self-destruction and loss of business mission.
Instead, if you desire a good business opportunity, this will strengthen the business - and includes a fair amount of friction and conflict on the way.
Gamestop CEO @ryancohen on becoming comfortable with people not liking him:
"How would my employees describe me? I hope they don't like me."
"I don't have the desire to be liked. When you want to be liked, it doesn't take you very far in life."

The beauty of things only appears with a delay, as a memory. Not the present brilliance, immediate stimulus, but the still afterglow is beautiful. Beauty is a latecomer.

The cancellation of the livestreaming of Maj. Hasan’s execution is a profound event in the history of the world. Trump acted no differently than Pilate did 2000 years ago in response to the people. The difference now is the people have acted in the truth that even a man guilty of murder and enemy of the state is *one of them*, a truth revealed to the world by the resurrection of an innocent man put to death outside the city walls *for all to see*.
It is a sad, tragic turn that @Pontifex who has extolled the “breath of life” breathed into the human by God has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
Nope. If you can measure something, it's the choice of what to measure that becomes the matter of taste. If you can measure it, no taste required. You can't automate taste.
Replying to @benjitaylor
if you can measure taste you can automate it xitter.cf/ccatalini/status/20858…

I've spent 30 years building software, leading engineering teams, and mostly hiding with computers to avoid messy humans. But now I think the CTO title is gone within 18 months. We don't need it.
The replacement is a Chief Ambition Officer.
The bottleneck we all seeing is knowing what to build, having the conviction to bet on it, great creativity, selling it, building communities, and assembling extraordinary small team of people.
The 10x engineer becomes the 10x team builder. I guess I had it backwards all along. Shit.

Saying software is dead because anyone can build it is like saying photography is dead now that everyone in the world has a camera in their pocket
Not only is it not dead it's the beginning of the Kodak Brownie moment for software, and we will see an absolute explosion of it
It will be the first generation for who building software will feel no different than using it. This is crazy!
The quality and bar of what we expect from our everyday apps will be raised dramatically, we'll have personal software, we'll have disposable software, and agents will be the foundation for most of it
Tech has always been chaotic and evolving, the people who have been able to adapt and move in front of new opportunities have always excelled, this is nothing new, I'm seeing it now and we'll see it 10 years from now
Find the opportunities in the chaose and disruption, there are countless of them
Validation is even more important. This is implicit in being able to define “done”. Being able to satisfy “done” is verification.
But don’t be afraid of not fully defining “done”, be willing to learn and suffer failure.
Verification is one of the most important things for getting great results out of your agent.
Clearly define "done" before code review starts.
A reviewer, human or agent, asked to find bugs without this may still find something that could be improved.
Give Claude checks it can run (bash commands, tests, clicking through the app in a browser) and have it pass that too before it says it's finished.
When nothing blocks merge and ship.
How many things “work” today that we don’t understand?
