Yesterday’s newest arrival; lumpy knee baby. Still waiting on whether or not we’ll need x-rays on this one, for now the lump has been drained of what turned out to be most likely a rather excessive amount of synovial fluid. Or simply put; poor baby got a leaky knee.

Also that makes it 12 pigeons in just a week in my area. 🫠 Some didn’t make it, some I had to kindly ask to be brought elsewhere because I really do not have the space or energy for this many patients. Needless to say it’s been rather crazy here. Really could use a break.

Was at the sanctuary the other day to take photos of the new residents but our resident queen Brummel was loafing so beautifully on the branch I just had to take pictures of her too.

For the record, the picture hardly shows just how big she is but she is HUGE! Full size King pigeon, I held her once and you really need both hands to even remotely contain her.

Good gods it’s that time again where I’m basically picking up pigeons daily, this one’s the fifth already since Monday - could’ve had a sixth as well but I asked if they could hand it in at the vet school clinic instead because idk where to put these anymore. 😩

Pigeon paramyxovirus is hitting my neighbourhood HARD this year it seems, I’m absolutely not equipped for this many sick birds here. 🫠

Not exactly how I was planning to spend my morning but hey, at least this gotta be a record time rescue. We were notified at 9am, I was heading home with the pigeon in hand at 10am thanks to the quick help of the janitor responsible for the building. She immediately came to help!

The little one seems to be safe and sound so far, just a bit exhausted from the stress of being trapped like this for a few hours. It’ll have time to recover for a day with a fresh bowl of water and seeds to peruse before it’ll be released back out again.

Sometimes you just gotta turn a little squab into a little skater squab. Doctor’s orders!

I promise we didn’t just tape its toes to a piece of cardboard for fun too, even though the result was impossibly cute to watch. The squab is severely underdeveloped and this is basically a brace to correct its wonky deformed leg posture!

Sometimes it just be like that, you open the door expecting to see happy pigeons in the dovecote but instead you spot right away in the distance a baby with a squashed face. Somehow it was still able to eat some seeds despite everything though. Now waiting for our vet’s feedback

Why must the vegan cat diet discourse be brought up again like we don’t already have scientific evidence that a) yes we can synthesise vegan cat food and b) yes highly processed food like that is fucking unhealthy for anyone?

IMHO veganism should be about respect for the animals and their needs, not about forcing absolutely unnatural habits on animals.

On a sidenote at some point I realised that the topic of pigeon eggs is like the ultimate alignment test for vegans cause replacing their eggs saves them from human made suffering but on the other hand taking eggs is considered abuse by many too.

Good news! Another volunteer caught the bad pigeon. Bad news… well, it’s not looking too good for the remaining toes but at least we can save the rest of the foot from dying off slowly too.
The downside of having a good camera is that you see way too many stringfoot pigeons. Also the advantage. Now we know the second one needs help ASAP though and isn’t just suffering from an old injury. Sadly he keeps quite far away from people. 🥲🥲

Stringfoot, before and after, about four months apart. Poor girl was in so much pain she couldn’t even stand anymore.

She still prefers to spend most of her time sitting, this time it’s sitting comfortably because she wants to though. Mostly on her nest. She loves nesting.

Poor kid made it through the first night and is slightly less miserable now. A hint of light has returned to its eyes, but we’re still a long ways off from knowing if it’ll recover fully.
First PMV patient of the new season and it’s a very very bad one. Lil guy is just skin and bones, poor kid.
