John Napier: The Scientist Who Wouldn’t Overclaim John Russell Napier was no fringe character. He was a British primatologist, paleoanthropologist, and physician of real standing — MRCS, LRCP, D.Sc. A leading authority on primate taxonomy, hands, feet, and locomotion, he helped name Homo habilis with Louis Leakey and Philip Tobias, founded the Primate Society of Great Britain, and directed the Primate Biology Program at the Smithsonian Institution. I was unfamiliar with Napier until I started looking through older documentary footage and came across his 1968 interview with Roger Patterson for the BBC film Bigfoot: America’s Abominable Snowman. While at the Smithsonian he had already examined the Patterson-Gimlin film multiple times. In the documentary he sits down with Patterson himself, questions him about the encounter, the musky smell, and whether it could have been a hoax. Patterson held firm. Napier never fully came out one way or the other about the Big Man. On the film he stayed measured and a little conflicted. He wrote that the scientific evidence taken collectively pointed toward a clever hoax and noted problems with the biomechanics, yet he also stated there was nothing in the film that would prove conclusively it was a hoax. He could not see the zipper. The footprints impressed him far more — especially certain trackways he found difficult to dismiss as the work of a sophisticated hoaxer. I find his interest in the subject understandable every bit as much as his reluctance to draw a firm conclusion. I can’t criticize him for maintaining that middle ground — it speaks to his credibility and care with the evidence. The final quote in his 1973 book Bigfoot: The Yeti and Sasquatch in Myth and Reality perfectly illustrates it: “I am convinced that the Sasquatch exists, but whether it is all that it is cracked up to be is another matter altogether. There must be something in northwest America that needs explaining, and that something leaves man-like footprints.” A scientist of Napier’s caliber did not need to take this subject seriously. The fact that he investigated it carefully, interviewed the principal players, and still protected his professional standing with measured language suggests the topic held real interest for him — even if he refused to overclaim. That careful middle ground still carries weight. Was Napier being too wishy-washy… or do you respect him more for refusing to overclaim? #Bigfoot #Sasquatch #JohnNapier #PGF

Not "Bigfoot," the late John Green commented, instead calling them the "Big Hairy Apes." To me (@CryptoLoren), they are "True Giants." Coauthored a published book about the different species with the late Mark A. Hall.

Wait, wait, wait… this witness illustration from the Bigelow Cryptid File was done in 2010 but the first TV appearance of MANBEARPIG was 4/26/06 on South Park! It actually could be true that there’s a connection! What do you think? (I’m super cereal about this, guys)

Are reporters reading Kelleher, Colm & Knapp, George: Hunt for the Skinwalker: Science Confronts the Unexplained at a Remote Ranch in Utah (Paraview Pocket Books, 2005) for 2018? What other phenomenon (Bigfoot?) was studied by Robert Bigelow with the $22 million? @CryptoLoren

"...the creature is standing on two legs, the estimated height is six to seven feet." 🫣 Drop 7 - Creatures 🐺 "Interspersed with the allegations of multiple creature sightings are multiple reports of unidentified flying objects." "Eleven (11) separate individuals witnessed a bipedal 'dog-like' creature and/or orbs of light at different times in different locations near the Utah Ranch property." (NEAR, not ON Skinwalker - I'm reading the interviews of the witnesses now. An old-lady-like creature jumping from rooftop to rooftop. Imagine seeing something like that? I believe Bigelow talked about that sighting recently on his podcast, and I shared it.) Utah Ranch Report Abstract 2010 Witnesses have reported unidentified balls of light at close range, daytime sightings of "dog-like" creatures running on two legs, unnatural animalistic howling/screaming, "little people", prehistoric-like birds and a maggot which measured about 8-feet long and 2 to 3-feet in diameter. To date, May 7, 2010, over twenty-five (25) people have been contacted and interviewed in person, predominantly at their homes. This group consists of all life-long residents of the area within a mile or two of the ranch property, four (4) local police officers, eleven (11) Native Americas, including a Shaman, the director of the local Fish and Wildlife office, twelve (12) ranchers, six (6) business owners and approximately fifteen (15) members of the Mormon Church. All of the people interviewed have had first hand encounters. Eleven (11) separate individuals witnessed a bipedal "dog-like" creature and/or orbs of light at different times in different locations near the Utah Ranch property. Many of the reported observations took place during daytime and nighttime and occurred from twenty years ago to as recent as April 2010. The eyewitness ages ranged from fifteen to seventy-seven years old. The following is a summary of the Utah ranch investigation findings to date 1. Comprehensive multiple witness descriptions of a large "dog" or "wolf" like creature or creatures which have the ability to walk and run at speed on two legs. Multiple witnesses have described in their interviews, when the creature is standing on two legs, the estimated height is six to seven feet. From these interviews, there may be at least three separate types of creatures. Total number of independent witnesses (separately interviewed) eleven. 2. Multiple witness descriptions of small, hairy, three-foot tall "troll" like creatures with long arms which appear to run in a similar way to chimpanzees or orangutan. (Four independent eyewitnesses) 3. Multiple witnesses (>2) reports of large "worm" like creatures, a prehistoric "pterodacty" like creature, "little people" and other anomalies. It should be noted the vast majority of reports detailed in points 1-3 have allegedly occurred within the last five to seven years. 4. Interspersed with the allegations of multiple creature sightings are multiple reports of unidentified flying objects, to include unidentified aircraft and "balls of light. Some of these allegations are recent and some historic récollection. 5. BAASS has obtained photographs of tracks in the snow which remain unidentified. These photographs identify (a) two sets of tracks merge into one, and (b) where tracks in the snow on the Ranch property appear to walk "through" a barbed wire fence. BAASS has also obtained a variety of hair samples from the vicinity of these tracks. These hair samples are currently undergoing scientific DNA analysis. 6. BAASS has conducted comprehensive electromagnetic signature sweeps of the Ranch property. One set of measurements taken at a point on the mesa at the ranch indicated a strong, yet to be explained, signal which was not detected on previous readings. The report described: "Location D2 recorded two large signals in both the horizontal and vertical positions. These signals were not present the day before when measurements were taken at DO. The first signal was 1210, 1213 and 1216 MHz and the second large spike was 1232.5, 1235.5 and 1238.5 MHz. The signals fell in the frequency bands of 1164-1215 and 1215-1240 MHz. This space is allocated for Earth exploration-satellite (active), radio location G56, radio navigation-satellite (space-to-Earth) (space to space) G132, and space research (active). Provisions G56 and G132 state these frequency spans are primarily for military purposes, but they can be used by other federal agencies in support of science and research" The signals were detectable between 1-2 GHz with both horizontal and vertically polarized antennae. Further measurements and research, particularly into satellite transmitting frequencies and times will be required to identify the origin of these signals.
