🎃 'Twas the Night Before Halloween An eerie tale from the haunted woods 'Twas the night before Halloween, deep in the wood, Not a creature was stirring, as no creature should. The cobwebs hung thick from the branches with care, In hopes that some poor, foolish soul would come there. The bats were all nestled in hollows of trees, While ghosts drifted silently, borne on the breeze. And I in my cloak, with my lantern held tight, Had foolishly wandered these woods late at night. When out in the darkness there rose such a clatter, I sprang from the path to see what was the matter. Away through the brambles I stumbled with fright, And peered through the fog in the pale, ghostly light. The moon on the leaves of the forest below, Cast shadows that twisted wherever I'd go. When what to my terrified eyes should appear, But a carriage of bones, drawn by eight spectral deer! With a driver so ghastly, so ancient and thin, I knew in a moment the trouble I'd been in. More rapid than ravens his nightmares they came, And he whistled and shrieked as he called them by name: "Now, Shadow! Now, Specter! Now, Phantom and Fright! On, Banshee! On, Bogey! On, Terror and Blight! To the top of the oak! To the old gallows wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!" As dead leaves that dance in a cold autumn gale, They rose through the mist with a long, mournful wail. So up through the treetops the phantoms they flew, With a carriage of nightmares—and Death riding too. And then, in a heartbeat, I heard overhead, The rattling and clattering bones of the dead. As I ducked beneath branches and turned myself round, Down the old coachman came with a terrible bound. He was dressed all in black, from his head to his feet, And the smell of the grave made the horror complete. A sack full of skulls he had slung on his back, And a murder of crows followed close on his track. His eyes—how they flickered! Like embers they glowed! His grin stretched like cracks in a long-buried road. His fingers were crooked, his face pale as snow, And a cold, curling mist swirled wherever he'd go. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke circled round him like some funeral wreath. He had a gaunt face and a hollow old chest, With a raven perched high on his shoulder to rest. He was frightful and grim, a right horrible sight, And I trembled to see him that dark autumn night. But a wink of his eye and a tilt of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his chore, Hanging jack-o'-lanterns from branches once more. He scattered black candles and charms on the ground, While strange little goblins came dancing around. Then raising one finger, he summoned the breeze, And a thousand carved pumpkins lit up in the trees! The whole forest shimmered with orange and green, A glorious sight for the night Halloween! He sprang to his carriage, to his team gave a cry, And away they all flew through the dark, starless sky. But I heard him exclaim, as he vanished from sight— "HAPPY HALLOWEEN TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD FRIGHT!"
