Beijing comprises 16 districts - some urban, some rural - & each district is itself further subdivided into subdistricts. & for some daft reason, I've decided I want to visit each of these subdistricts. It won't happen. It's stupid. But there's (probably) no harm in trying๐Ÿงต

Dya know what, at the time I found that incredibly condescending. But I mean...I suppose it's pretty fun I can tell people I've seen a Ballon d'Or winner
When Tottenham Hotspur were beating Tranmere Rovers 6-0 in the FA Cup back in 2019, Mauricio Pottechino decided to bring Harry Kane off the bench. Later, he explained that it was โ€œTo show respect to people here so they could see an English iconโ€. Harry Kane is now officially a Ballon Dโ€™or winner. #TRFC

Steve Bell was sacked by The Guardian over this cartoon of Benjamin Netanyahu.
Just in: IPSO has refused to investigate the Telegraph cartoon of Mothin Ali, the Green Party's Muslim deputy leader, grinning over a knife and fork at the severed head of Zack Polanski, its Jewish leader, who is drawn with a hooked nose. Nearly 1,200 of you complained. IPSO's reason: the cartoon is about two individuals, so only Mothin and Zack can complain. How racist the drawing is doesn't come into it. IPSO did not have to do this, and it has done the opposite before. IPSO's rules let it take up a complaint from people other than the person written about, when the breach is significant, and there is a substantial public interest in looking at it. In July 2023 it used that power. It ruled that Jeremy Clarkson's Sun column about the Duchess of Sussex was sexist, after complaints from two women's charities, the Fawcett Society and the WILDE Foundation. The Duchess did not complain. The Telegraph's editor, Chris Evans, chairs the committee that writes the Editors' Code, which is the rulebook IPSO enforces. The Telegraph is still selling prints of the cartoon today. IPSO's rule says it may take up a complaint like this, not that it must. So this was a choice. Picture a school. One boy draws two classmates, a Muslim boy and a Jewish boy. He gives the Jewish boy a hooked nose and puts his head on a plate, and draws the Muslim boy about to eat it. He pins the picture to the noticeboard and sells copies at the gate. A thousand pupils go to the head teacher. She tells them she can only act if the two boys in the picture come to her themselves. So the picture stays on the board, and every Muslim and Jewish child in the school walks past it each morning. The boy who drew it learns he can do it again. And the rulebook the head teacher is reading from was written by a committee his dad chairs. Nobody would say that head teacher is protecting the children. She is protecting the boy who drew it. That is what IPSO has done. It says it regulates the Telegraph, and it has just told nearly 1,200 people that a racist cartoon in a paper it regulates is not its business unless the two men drawn in it come and ask.

Found a Chinese antique seller specializing in vintage cigarette packaging, with some rare cigarette packs from the Cultural Revolution era (60s / 70s). They feature slogans such as โ€œThe Entire Country (Except Taiwan) Is a Sea of Red!โ€

Trust me, I know from experience that thereโ€™s no such thing as independent, free legal advice. I donโ€™t have proper legal representation because itโ€™s simply too expensive. It looks like theyโ€™re really coming after me this time, so Iโ€™m looking into getting a proper lawyer.

My family are from Jerusalem. They live under Israeli occupation in the West Bank and canโ€™t return to the towns they originate from. But the political correspondent at The Spectator can enter and travel without restrictions. Is there a word for this?

The reality of the "independent" review telling every school in England to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism: its author, Sir David Bell, was being paid by a government agency while he wrote it, and a pro-Israel charity has listed him on its council for ten years. The government told the public he was "independent of Government" and had "no conflict of interest". Neither is true. What we found: - Bell was paid ยฃ20,000 a year as vice-chair of Skills England, a government agency, in a seat the Department for Education gave him. He held it until August, through most of the review. - The Academic Study Group on Israel and the Middle East has listed him on its council since at least 2016. Its website says its one firm policy is opposing boycotts of Israel. It gives talks on Israel in schools, which is exactly what his review was asked to judge. - In 2005, as chief inspector of schools, he singled out Muslim schools as a challenge to "our coherence as a nation". The chairman of the Association of Muslim Schools called it Islamophobia, and his own inspectors said he had presented a personal view as inspection evidence. Then we followed the money: - The department's ยฃ1.3 million antisemitism training contract had one bidder, according to the tender record. It went to Palace Yard, a company set up in 2022 by the former Labour MP Natascha Engel. - That contract says all its training must use the IHRA definition "as a foundation". It was signed eight months before Bell was appointed. His review then recommended IHRA. - Two of the people who advised Bell, from Partnerships for Jewish Schools and the Antisemitism Policy Trust, now sit on the group putting his recommendations into practice. - The Union of Jewish Students, also on that group, holds a contract worth almost ยฃ1 million to train universities. Its own policies include "UJS to advocate for Israel within UK Policy and International Law". - UK Lawyers for Israel* (UKLFI) and the Campaign Against Antisemitism* (CAA) both say the review adopted their recommendations. *For context, UKLFI once justified the starvation of Palestinians in Gaza by the Israeli occupation as "good for obesity". Both these groups have staunchly defended Israel throughout its perpetration of a genocide in Gaza, and regularly conflate Jewish people with the apartheid state. This matters because the review decides how every school treats what pupils and teachers say about Israel, and the IHRA definition it recommends treats some criticism of Israel as antisemitic. A review with that power should come from someone with no pay from government and no tie to a pro-Israel charity. Bell had both. The government put one in a footnote and left the other out. We mapped every link, each with its source, explaining just how far this review is from "independent": newscord.org/editorials/daviโ€ฆ

Basic education piece: Not all Jewish people are Zionists. Lots of Zionists aren't Jews. The Board of Deputies largely self identity as Zionists. The Media often report the Board of Deputies as the opinion of Jewish people. Yet many Jewish people say #NotInOurName
