The robotics security ecosystem remains nascent. @CarnegieMellon University @CyLab's Robotics Security & Privacy Initiative (RSPI) is a timely effort to make security and privacy first-order concerns as consumer robotics moves from prototypes to products. This echoes lessons from automotive security. In 2016, my graduate research examined how connected vehicles relied on flat in-vehicle networks where infotainment and cyber-physical systems shared pathways, and how the industry shifted to segmented, secure architectures. Humanoid robotics appear at a similar inflection point. RSPI’s work on AI safety and guardrails helps define the methods and controls required for trustworthy AI-driven robots. Organizations that implement these foundations early will set the standard for the field.
