Absolutely gutted.
I was fortunate to fly Sir Patrick several times and always enjoyed talking with him. What a wonderful and lovely man. RIP Captain Picard. bbc.co.uk/news/live/cq23dve8…

The changes to self-assessment taxation exemplify a system that's run for the convenience of the Treasury/HMRC, not the self-employed, sole traders and small businesses. That has to change.

Being self-employed, this and Making Tax Digital make me want to emigrate. Ever more bureaucratic inconvenience for such a paltry, negligible gain to the public purse!
The hidden tax measure in the Budget is huge for people paying tax under self-assessment - sole traders, partners, landlords, retired investors.
For 6th April 2028-29, you currently pay 50% of your income tax late in the tax year in question (in January 2029), 50% just after the year end (in July 2029) with any make-up payment in January 2030.
Under the new proposals you will pay your tax perhaps monthly or quarterly (TBC) from April 2029 onwards. A rough analysis suggests the impact is to draw about 50% of your tax bill forward, a huge cashflow boost to HMRC and a significant funding issue for the self-employed.
The Treasury recognises this, and expects to raise £1.3bn of additional tax in 29/30 as a result of this change.
The cashflow impact of the accelerated charge will send some businesses to the wall.

Yet more tax punishment against the self employed. This Labour government measure has the potential for HMRC to demand tax payments before the self employed have been paid by clients or customers for their work.

A footnote to The Budget:
Labour government March 2026 forecast: “You’ll be richer.”
Labour government October forecast: “You’ll be poorer.”
The October 2026 disposable income forecast takes one look at energy prices, fuel prices, food prices, mortgage rates and the record tax burden and says that our disposable income is shafted.

The answer: keep it simple. Don’t add special allowances and exceptions. Resist the urge to be clever.
No more complexification.

Have a guess who this is a photograph of? It’s Vincent Van Gogh. I’m blown away that there is an actual photograph of him. How did I not know? He was 19 years old when this was taken. I can’t tell you who the photographer was as it’s not recorded.

Harry Kane is great role model. As well as being a world class footballer, England captain and all time record goalscorer for England, he’s also a decent bloke. Here he is showing his appreciation to his wife, Kate Goodland after receiving the Ballon D’or.
