When David Hyde Pierce first walked onto the Frasier set, no one knew what was about to happen. He was quiet. Polite. Almost scholarly. He looked like someone who belonged behind a piano, not in a sitcom. He adjusted his tie, glanced at the writers, and asked one simple question: β€œDo you want him anxious… or desperate?” By the end of that first rehearsal, the crew was on its feet β€” applauding. That was the day television met Dr. Niles Crane β€” and comedy met something close to poetry. Niles wasn’t supposed to steal the show. Frasier already had its star: Kelsey Grammer, one of TV’s greats. Niles was written as a side dish β€” a witty brother who might pop in now and then. But David Hyde Pierce turned him into something else entirely. He gave neurosis a heartbeat. He made awkwardness elegant. He turned intellectual snobbery into art. Every glance, every tremor, every tiny movement meant something. The tilt of a head. The flick of a wrist. The trembling voice that could make you laugh one second and ache the next. He didn’t just act. He composed. He played Niles like a piece of music β€” all precision, tempo, and tenderness. Before Frasier, Pierce wasn’t famous β€” not yet. He was a Yale graduate who studied classical music before chasing theater dreams. He’d spent years performing Shakespeare, waiting for someone to notice. Hollywood gave him bit parts β€” lawyers, scientists, background faces. Then Frasier happened. Producers cast him partly because he looked so much like Grammer it was uncanny. They thought it’d be funny. They didn’t know they’d just discovered one of TV’s most complex, beloved sibling duos β€” a pairing so sharp and soulful it redefined what sitcom acting could be. Over 11 seasons, David Hyde Pierce gave Niles a pulse. The unrequited love for Daphne. The rivalry with Frasier. The panic attacks, the perfectionism, the longing to be understood. It all felt real. He turned fainting, sweating, and even ironing into high art. Remember the scene where he sets himself on fire β€” and never breaks rhythm? That’s not slapstick. That’s choreography. And then came the stillness β€” those rare quiet moments where comedy melted into vulnerability. When Niles finally told Daphne he loved her, he didn’t shout it. He breathed it. And millions of people exhaled with him. He won four Emmys β€” but never let awards define him. Off-camera, Pierce was just as graceful. He avoided fame’s noise. He gave quietly to AIDS research. He went back to the theater whenever Hollywood felt too loud. And when he came out publicly in 2007, he did it the only way David Hyde Pierce could β€” simply, sincerely, without spectacle. One truth. One sentence. No performance. And then he went back to work. Broadway welcomed him like an old friend. In Curtains, he earned a Tony Award. In Hello, Dolly! with Bette Midler, he found joy again. Whether on a soundstage or under stage lights, he never needed volume, scandal, or ego. His power lived in precision. In timing. In empathy. He made millions laugh β€” and, somehow, made them feel seen. Because behind every nervous smile, every trembling gesture, every fumbled confession β€” was something achingly human. The reminder that beneath all our pretensions and insecurities, what we really want β€” what Niles Crane wanted β€” is simple. To be known. To be understood. To be loved, completely, for who we are

Never forget that a few weeks ago half this fucking ecosystem was holding a state funeral for Rod Liddle. Suddenly every professional shit-stirrer in Britain was Cicero. - He was a great satirist. - He was a fearless polemicist. - He was Jonathan fucking Swift with a fag hanging out of his mouth. All the murkier bits were quietly folded underneath the tablecloth. The sexism, the misogyny, the domestic violence, the endless misanthropic trolling, the whole career spent behaving as though civilisation would collapse unless somebody periodically wrote something revolting in The Spectator and called it courage. But Jason Arday? Apparently his great unforgivable crime was that he may have been a bit of a fucking blagger. He told tall stories. He embellished things. He convinced prestigious people that he was more extraordinary than he actually was. He may have blagged his way into rooms full of clever white people who then enthusiastically told everybody how wonderful he was. STOP THE FUCKING PRESS. A charismatic man exaggerated his achievements and important institutions swallowed it whole. We have apparently discovered fraud. And Christ, look at the difference in cultural treatment. A white male provocateur like Liddle can spend decades being obnoxious, offensive, self-mythologising and professionally irritating and it gets repackaged as roguishness. We celebrate him as a maverick. A rogue, A dangerous wit. Bit of a bastard, but what a writer. A Black academic allegedly embellishes marathon times and elements of his biography and suddenly Britain develops the investigative appetite of fucking Woodward and Bernstein. Every claim checked. Every former student interviewed. Every old job excavated. Every anecdote cross-examined. Every institution dragged into the dock. And hovering over all of it is that poisonous little insinuation: DEI. How did this man get there? Who lowered the standards? Which deserving person was displaced? Funny, because British academia has never exactly suffered a shortage of white plagiarists, cranks, bullshitting grandees, hereditary mediocrities, eugenicists, financial scandals and people whose professional altitude substantially exceeded their intellectual horsepower. Where was this incandescent concern for institutional standards then? Where were the fucking torches? Where was the tedious national inquiry into how some spectacularly mediocre white bloke had acquired a chair, three honorary fellowships and the confidence to explain civilisation to everybody else? Apparently the system only became an existential emergency when a Black man may have blagged it. I have spent years telling people the scar under my eye came from fighting a grizzly bear with a penknife. It actually came from playing rugby when I was ten. Nobody appointed me Professor of Ursine Combat because of it, admittedly, but the principle stands. Sometimes people bullshit. Sometimes institutions are stupid enough to believe them. The Arday story deserved scrutiny. What it did not deserve was this extraordinary racial pantomime in which one possibly fraudulent Black professor became evidence that the entire project of allowing Black people into prestigious institutions had somehow gone horribly wrong. Because if bullshitters occupying positions above their station discredits the system that elevated them, Britain is going to have to close Parliament, half the newspapers and several fucking universities by lunchtime on Monday.

🚨 𝗕π—₯π—˜π—”π—žπ—œπ—‘π—š: The Belgian federation has released a new statement: "After learning through media reports of FIFA’s decision to lift the automatic suspension of player Balogun, the RBFA sent a letter to FIFA requesting a copy of the decision, an explanation of the process that had been followed, and setting out its position regarding the applicable regulations." "As its only response, FIFA sent a letter to the RBFA stating that it considered this correspondence to constitute an appeal, that a judge had been appointed, and that the RBFA had only a few hours to complete that appeal. No information whatsoever was provided by FIFA." "All of this occurred while FIFA simultaneously refused to respond to the RBFA’s legitimate requests." "Furthermore, during the match coordination meeting, FIFA deliberately removed the section concerning the automatic suspension of players from its presentation. This topic had nonetheless been part of all such meetings before each of the previous four matches. The RBFA questioned FIFA, both orally and in writing, about the reasons for this change, yet once again received no response." "To be clear, as of this moment, the RBFA has still not received any decision or any explanation from FIFA regarding this matter. It therefore has no alternative but to challenge the player's eligibility for the upcoming match." "Regardless of the sporting outcome of this match, the RBFA is deeply saddened by the course of events and will continue to fight in the coming hours, days and months in defence of the fundamental principles of ethics, fair competition, and the interests of football as a whole."
