Russia’s most renowned independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, announced its closure after 3+ decades of operation, blaming relentless official pressure. Fearing a popular uprising against his invasion of Ukraine, Putin can't tolerate independent media. trib.al/cgxDak5

I'm awed by Russian journalists like those at Novaya Gazeta, whose founder won the Nobel Peace Prize. But Putin has crushed the Novaya Gazeta, and it is now closing. nytimes.com/2026/10/30/world… We US journalists can be inspired by the bravery of our Russian counterparts.

Remember Kostyantyn Vlasenko, the soldier from Ukraine’s 30th Mechanized who was recently rescued from the battlefield in a spectacular evacuation using a drone? Today, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. For 491 days, since June 2025, he had continuously held his position near the village of Senkivka in Kharkiv Oblast, carrying out missions. For 232 of those days, he was completely alone, after his fellow soldier was killed while attempting to withdraw. After being severely wounded, he was forced to amputate his own feet with a knife. Yet he remained in radio contact, continued relaying vital battlefield intelligence, and received food and medical supplies delivered by drones. Finally, in October 2026, after numerous failed attempts to rescue him, he was successfully evacuated from the battlefield using a heavy-lift drone, in what was the first rescue operation of its kind in history.

Likely a new record by Ukraine's Armed Forces in terms of multiple strikes on one Russian infrastructure target this morning at Russia's massive Novokuybyshevsk refinery, with 11(!) areas of the facility currently burning.

A strong decision by the U.S. State Department – authorizing Ukraine’s purchase of Patriot interceptors to counter Russian ballistic missiles. Five hundred PAC-3 interceptors is a substantial number, and very soon – this winter – they COULD make for a highly effective defense package. However, it has been stipulated that deliveries may begin ONLY IN A FEW YEARS. We are asking our American partners to find a solution for the time when there is a real danger and a real need to use PAC-3 interceptors. Right now, the Russians are attacking our energy infrastructure every single day. In just these past two weeks of October, there have already been more than 30 Russian strikes on critical parts of our power grid. It is right now, even before the beginning of winter, that Putin has started carrying out his operation to attack the systems that sustain life in our cities and communities. The targets are electricity, heating, water supplies, bridges, and life in our cities in general. We did ask our American partners to provide Ukraine with a winter support package – at a rate of 100 Patriot interceptors per month. Five hundred missiles would be enough to protect our skies over the coming months – precisely when it is so important for Ukraine to be in a strong position in negotiations and for Russia NOT to succeed in breaking life in Ukrainian cities and communities. The United States, our European partners, and other partners around the world have sufficient stocks of PAC-3 interceptors in their warehouses. Providing them to Ukraine right now – in the winter of 2026–2027 – and replenishing our partners’ arsenals LATER, in THE FOLLOWING YEARS, through this production already contracted and paid for by Ukraine and our partners would be the right approach. And it is entirely feasible. We are grateful to President Trump. Importantly, we recently discussed PAC-3 interceptors with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Ukraine is grateful to the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Administration overall for granting this authorization. But we are asking for decisions that can guarantee the protection of lives not the day after tomorrow or sometime later, but at the very moment the threat is there – when Russia is killing and destroying. I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine! state.gov/releases/bureau-of…

When “Star Trek: The Next Generation” premièred, in 1987, a newspaper referred to its leading man as an “unknown British Shakespearean actor.” Patrick Stewart, who was then 47 and had spent 14 years as a full-time member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, was catapulted into pop-culture fame as Jean-Luc Picard. In the years after, he continued his illustrious stage acting and embodied other cult-TV figures, such as Professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” series. In 2023, the actor sat down with Michael Schulman to discuss his new memoir, “Making It So,” filled with tales of driving Paul McCartney’s car, learning to be Captain Picard, and trading quips with Queen Elizabeth. Jean-Luc Picard remains the single most compelling vision of progressive politics I am familiar with — secular, rational, compassionate, egalitarian; a believer in progress & abundance but also duty, hard work, and a constant battle for self-improvement and improving the world.
