I’ve seen a couple of posts about this so wanted to demystify. Today, every Muse user gets a free computer in the cloud. It's a real computer, and we’ve designed the security architecture of the Muse Secure VM carefully so you and your Muse can do almost anything you could with a computer sitting under your desk while keeping you and the system safe from threats like prompt injection. We wrote about this at length in our security blog post – security.muse.ai. Activity in the “runtime cell”, which you share with your Muse is unfettered, but sensitive actions are all overseen by the Sentinel, which runs outside of that cell. Similarly, all sensitive secrets - like the passwords you enter into Muse’s secure credential storage - are also stored outside the runtime cell. The runtime cell gets its own root filesystem (including a full Ubuntu linux image) separate from the host filesystem where your other more sensitive data lives. Because it is isolated from the sensitive stuff that runs on the same box, this means that we can, and do, offer users full visibility and control over the files in the runtime cell. Just as you can when you install Linux on your home computer, you can poke around and see all the files that make the system work - both debian system files and the binaries and data files that implement the parts of Muse which run in the runtime cell. This was a very deliberate choice - your Muse Secure VM truly is your own computer in the cloud. You can install software in it, write and compile code, use the browser to surf the web: it is your own Linux box that you can operate as you choose with your Muse. Poking around in this computer doesn't give you any privileged access to Meta infrastructure, or to other people's data If I may geek out a little here for a second… As a kid I loved to take things apart to see how they worked. As a teenager I got into computers and soon found myself drawn to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and the system registry, later Slackware’s /dev/, /proc/ etc – I could see how the system was laid out and as I explored what DLL files and .so files actually did, I gradually became able to meld the computer to my own will. We’re really proud to be able to put a real computer in millions of people’s hands with a similar level of transparency. We built a file explorer right into the Library tab of the UI. We want you to be able to see the markdown files Muse writes while it thinks about how to serve you better, and explore the internals of the system if you’d like to. So, when you ask your Muse to show you its entire filesystem, and receive gigabytes of files you’re seeing the full contents of the runtime cell. It’s yours to explore and enjoy! If you’re not a geek like me, or simply want to download the data that you personally have created directly with your Muse, we added a feature for that too in Settings > Data controls > Download your agent data.

Open-weight models carry real responsibilities. Hugging Face’s disclosure describes how GLM-5.2 was used in a self-hosted forensic workflow during a time-sensitive cyber incident, keeping sensitive attacker data and credentials within Hugging Face’s own environment. This demonstrates the practical value of responsibly deployed models for defensive cybersecurity and incident response. I just spoke with the Hugging Face team last week, and we are optimistic about the path ahead. We will continue to strengthen our cybersecurity and broader safety evaluations, improve documentation and secure deployment guidance, and work with the broader ecosystem to advance the responsible development and deployment of open-weight models. huggingface.co/blog/security…

Toto isn't even the most extreme example: Ajinomoto makes MSG. Their amino acid research produced the insulating substrate in virtually every high-end GPU. 95% global monopoly. In 2021 the chip shortage bottleneck wasn't silicon, it was Ajinomoto's film. Japan holds majority share in 14 critical semiconductor materials. The sintering process that creates a non-porous toilet is the same one that creates a contamination-free wafer chuck. The most critical layer of AI infrastructure is controlled by companies that make toilets, MSG, and window glass.
Activist investor Palliser Capital sent a letter to $7B Japanese toilet maker Toto and said it was “the most undervalued and overlooked AI memory beneficiary”. Toto known for its bidet toilets but the expertise in ceramics is crucial for memory manufacturing. Per FT, “Toto’s chuck technology uses ceramics designed to remain stable at very low temperatures, helping hold silicon wafers firmly during chip production. That makes it relevant to cryogenic etching, which is expected to grow as memory chips become more layered and complex.” Palliser believes Toto has a 5-year moat on the technology and should expand the operation. Advances ceramics already make up 40% of Toto’s operating profit while being only <10% of revenue. Toto is up +60% over the past year on their development.

Apple is speed-running the fastest destruction of goodwill with developers I've ever seen in 40 years of computers. It took Microsoft much longer to poison the pond in the 90s. It's really a sad sight.
Apple just terminated Epic's developer account, and they admitted that this tweet was one of the reasons. We don't want to think about Apple being evil. It would be so inconvenient. We don't want to switch to Android. But I see ever more signs that power has corrupted them.

Apple's plan to thwart Europe's new Digital Markets Act law is a devious new instance of Malicious Compliance. They are forcing developers to choose between App Store exclusivity and the store terms, which will be illegal under DMA, or accept a new also-illegal anticompetitive scheme rife with new Junk Fees on downloads and new Apple taxes on payments they don't process. Apple proposes that it can choose which stores are allowed to compete with their App Store. They could block Epic from launching the Epic Games Store and distributing Fortnite through it, for example, or block Microsoft, Valve, Good Old Games, or new entrants. The Epic Games Store is the #7 software store in the world (behind the 3 console stores, 2 mobile stores, and Steam on PC). We're determined to launch on iOS and Android and enter the competition to become the #1 multi-platform software store, on the foundation of payment competition, 0%-12% fees, and exclusive games like Fortnite. Epic has always supported the notion of Apple notarization and malware scanning for apps, but we strongly reject Apple's twisting this process to undermine competition and continue imposing Apple taxes on transactions they're not involved in. There's a lot more hot garbage in Apple's announcement. It will take more time to parse both the written and unwritten parts of this new horror show, so stay tuned.

Engineers: man I wish GH was better like stacked PRs or a review page which didn't freeze on large changes. GH: what I'm hearing is you want more AI features, yeah? We're going to copilot the shit outta your experience because the AI told us that's what you want, right?
Just as GitHub was founded on Git, today we are re-founded on Copilot. From the GA of Copilot Chat, to the new Copilot Enterprise, to the Copilot Partner Program and so much more – we are expanding and infusing Copilot into every aspect of GitHub. github.blog/2023-11-08-unive…
