Scientists studying pieces of an asteroid that travelled through space for billions of years have made a discovery that could change how we understand the origins of life. The asteroid, called Ryugu, was found to contain all five nucleobases used by life on Earth: adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine and uracil. These are the chemical building blocks that help DNA and RNA store and transmit genetic information. What makes this discovery extraordinary is that the asteroid never needed oceans, forests or living organisms to contain these ingredients. They were already present in material that had been drifting through space.
