The James Webb Space Telescope has been staring into the dawn of the cosmos and keeps finding the same strange freckles: tiny, fiercely red points of light that shouldn’t quite exist.
These “little red dots” are among the earliest objects we’ve ever seen, lighting up when the universe was less than a billion years old. At first glance they looked like impossibly massive baby galaxies or clusters of ancient stars. Spectral data told a different story. Hidden inside each compact crimson glow is a rapidly growing black hole, wrapped in an enormous, dense cocoon of hydrogen gas—sometimes large enough to span a solar system.
Astronomers have started calling them “black hole stars.” The black hole does the heavy lifting that nuclear fusion does inside a normal star, heating and ionizing the surrounding gas until the whole structure shines with a deep red light. The thick envelope also explains why these objects are so quiet in X-rays and radio: the gas swallows the high-energy radiation before it can escape.
They appear in huge numbers in the first billion years and then largely vanish, suggesting this is a short, violent growth phase. If the picture holds, these little red dots are the missing nurseries where the universe’s first supermassive black holes bulked up at speeds that standard models struggle to explain. Not cosmic death zones exactly—more like the chaotic, glowing incubators of the monsters that would later sit at the centers of galaxies.

Are galaxy clusters home to more fast radio bursts than expected—or are they acting as cosmic magnifying glasses?
Researchers identified 26 fast radio bursts (FRBs) that may be associated with galaxy clusters. The findings suggest a possible excess, but the mystery remains: Are the bursts originating within these enormous collections of galaxies, or is gravity magnifying signals from much farther away?
In our latest blog, SETI Institute astronomer Lauren Sgro and researcher Mawson Sammons explore what these fleeting radio signals could reveal about the universe.

Apollo 11 enters lunar orbit, July 19, 1969 🛰
After a 76-hour flight from Earth, the spacecraft—carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin—executed a maneuver to enter lunar orbit, allowing it to be captured by the Moon’s gravity and setting the stage for the historic landing the following day.

What is Quantum teleportation ? ✍️
1. Quantum teleportation transmits information, not matter, by transferring the quantum state of a particle using entanglement.
2. In 2017, researchers successfully teleported quantum information over 1,200 kilometers between Earth and a satellite via entangled photons.
3. The process relies on quantum entanglement, where two particles share a connected state, instantaneously influencing one another regardless of distance.
4. Teleportation involves destroying the original quantum state at the sender’s side to faithfully reproduce it at the receiver’s location.
5. Although quantum teleportation enables revolutionary technologies like quantum networks, it doesn’t allow faster-than-light communication because classical information transfer is still required.
6. Quantum teleportation could revolutionize quantum computing and secure communication by enabling quantum networks.
7. The "no-cloning theorem" of quantum mechanics makes copying an unknown quantum state impossible, but teleportation sidesteps this limit.

Brooklyn, New York, 1950s. Ebbets Field was home to the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1913 to 1957. Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s modern color barrier here in 1947, and Brooklyn celebrated its only World Series title in 1955. Five years later, the ballpark was demolished.
