At Macmillan Library for ‘AI Ni ya Who?’ to spotlight the invisible labour behind AI.
We heard powerful reflections on how Kenyan workers fuel global AI systems under exploitative conditions and why reclaiming worker power in the age of tech is urgent.

The panel shed light on how digital labor, often invisible and undervalued, had fallen disproportionately on the shoulders of women—particularly from the global South—who faced informal working conditions, little recognition, and systemic exploitation in shaping the very platforms we all use.
Panelists underscored the urgency of building a feminist internet, one that bridged the digital divide and amplified the voices of marginalized women across race, class, sexuality, and disability, so they too could access, shape, and thrive within digital spaces.
The conversation pushed beyond critique, calling for a reimagining of digital power structures—where women could lead, be fairly compensated, and co-create inclusive, community-centered online spaces through feminist tech leadership and policy reform.

Data labelers are the secret sauce to trustworthy AI models. "Garbage in Garbage out" (GIGO) as the old maxim goes. However, they aren't often recognized or treated accordingly. The innovator AI firms typically outsource the labeling to foreign locations for the cost and regulatory arbitrage. Unfortunately, regulation around the globe hasn't kept up with the industry's nascent yet frenetic pace of growth. This is in addition to the fact that innovator firms are highly concentrated geographically and in more privileged circumstances. The loopholes that emerge leave the less privileged data labelers vulnerable to unscrupulous businesses, personalities, and practices. Workers are left holding the proverbial bag.
So, what's being done about it? Join Timnit Gebru, the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR), and coworkers, as they kick off the Data Labelers Association, an international resource group, today 13 Feb 2025, at 18:00 CET / 12:00 EST / 20:00, EAT

Data labelers are vital to AI, ensuring accuracy through annotation. Yet, they often face low wages, job insecurity & mental strain. Advocating for fair treatment, better working conditions & career growth is crucial for a more ethical AI industry. #SupportDataLabelers #EthicalAI
